In 2005, a majority of Israelis, I among them, strongly supported pulling all our people from their homes in the disengagement from Gaza in the belief this would lead to peace and a thriving, stable, and prosperous, independent Palestinian nation. It was only a matter of weeks before they began disabusing us of the idea that they wanted peace.
Over the next two years, as rockets rained daily on Israeli border towns from Gaza, their destruction of the factories and agricultural industries we had gifted them, the election of Hamas and then Hamas’ murderous internal coup against other factions in Gaza … that peace-believing majority in Israel shrunk to a sliver.
I still held on to a belief in two-states and peace, as did, ironically, those southern border communities bearing the brunt of constant attacks from Gaza. I admit that my idealism was tarnished but not vanquished. It was shredded further when Gazans launched a war in 2012, now targeting not just border communities but sending rockets into Tel Aviv. It was nearly severed when they did the same more violently in 2014. By then, I was among a sliver of the sliver that still held hope for peace.
October 7th. Well, every last vestige of belief in peace and that there was any trace of a moral conscience or normal humanity residing in Gazans was murdered. It was murdered along with so many of my friends who devoted their lives to peace and to helping Gazans and those in Judea and Samaria along with more than 1,000 innocent others I didn’t personally know.
There is now a sliver of the sliver of the sliver in Israel who believe peace is possible with the Gazans or the Arabs in Judea and Samaria. I am not among them.
