China’s diplomatic statements on international crises in recent years have featured key changes in language and emphasis. Its initial response to the US–Israel war against Iran was less strident in its condemnation of US and Israeli actions compared to previous conflicts and military interventions, such as the US capture of Nicolás Maduro. On the day of Maduro’s capture China said it was ‘deeply shocked and strongly condemn[ed]’ the United States’ actions.
