Spain has a city on the African side of the Mediterranean because one small peninsula controlled one of the most important gateways between Europe and Africa. Ceuta sits on the north coast of Africa, bordered by Morocco and facing the Strait of Gibraltar. From the city, Spain is only a short distance across the water, while the Mediterranean and Atlantic worlds meet nearby. That location made Ceuta valuable for centuries. The city sits near the entrance to the Mediterranean, where ships moving between the Atlantic Ocean and southern Europe passed through one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints. Whoever controlled ports around the strait could influence trade, naval movement, military access, and contact between continents. Ceuta’s geography also made it defensible. The city occupies a narrow peninsula with high ground, coastline, and natural harbor access. Mount Hacho rises above the city and has often been identified as one of the possible southern “Pillars of Hercules,” paired with the Rock of Gibraltar across the strait. Ceuta changed hands many times before becoming Spanish. Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Islamic dynasties, and later Iberian powers all controlled or influenced the area at different points. Its location made it too strategic to remain ignored. Portugal captured Ceuta in 1415. That conquest marked one of the early overseas expansions of the Portuguese Empire. Ceuta gave Portugal a foothold in North Africa and a position near the Strait of Gibraltar at a time when Atlantic trade, Mediterranean access, and military competition were becoming increasingly important. Ceuta later became Spanish. When Portugal and Spain separated again after a period under the same monarchs, Ceuta chose to remain with Spain. In 1668, Portugal formally recognized Spanish control of the city through treaty. That is why the map looks unusual today. Ceuta is geographically in Africa, bordered by Morocco, but politically it is an autonomous city of Spain. Along with Melilla, it remains one of Spain’s two major land borders with Africa. Morocco disputes Spanish control of Ceuta, while Spain considers it an integral part of the country. The result is one of the most unusual borders in the world: a European city on the African mainland, created by centuries of maritime strategy, empire, treaties, and the geography of the Strait of Gibraltar. #archaeohistories

Since you guys like comparison, let's put the conversation in this direction. Gov. Rotimi Amaechi and Gov. Peter Obi were governors of their states during the same period. Nobody in Nigeria has relocated to Anambra State for greener pastures or a better life. We can't count the number of people who relocate to Rivers State for greener pastures, education, and jobs. In Rivers new jobs were opened as Shongi Farms and fish farms were established. RIWAMA and TIMRiv were established too. Rotimi Amaechi, as governor, employed both natives and non-indigents in different offices. How many jobs were created in Anambra? Did any non-Igbo get employed in Anambra State government? Peter Obi locked Anambra money in a bank. Your presidential candidate can't match the development strides of my vice presidential candidate.

When I served in Rivers State during my NYSC, many schools had no teachers, so corps members were used to fill the gap. Some schools had buildings but lacked basic learning materials libraries had no books, laboratories had little or no equipment, and essential facilities were missing. Ironically, schools were repainted every few months and the surroundings were kept neatly maintained, while the more important educational needs were neglected. As for corps members’ state allowances, Rivers State owed many of us our monthly stipends. It was only after Wike became Governor that payments resumed, beginning with the corps members serving during his administration.

@Itelson @General_Somto This is not banter. Niger state is bigger than the entire South East. Oyo is almost the same size with South East. Fact-check me. Asides Nomadism, Small landmass is one major cause of Ibos migration. Give Ibos Biafra today & see them waging war against South South because of land

@General_Somto The entire South East is not more than one state in the South West or North. Ibos should be be grateful that they are having 5 states. Two major factors considered before creating new state in Nigeria are geographical location and language affinity.

The same way South Africans are chasing Nigerians out of their country is the same way Lagosians tell other Nigerians to leave Lagos and return to their own states. We condemn South Africa for xenophobia, yet we rarely talk about the discrimination happening in Lagos. We are all bunch of hypocrites. 😂😂

Just a thought. Senegal are my rightful African champions and also one of the teams I’m supporting right now….but I have a genuine question. When they walked off the pitch during the AFCON final against Morocco, do you think they would have done that at the World Cup?

There isn’t a single state in Nigeria today where the Federal Government is not rehabilitating at least one federal road. In many states, two or three federal roads are under reconstruction simultaneously. Yet some people keep repeating the lame line: “Who needs new roads when the old ones haven’t been fixed?” Who told you existing roads aren’t being fixed? Who said a country cannot rehabilitate old roads while building new ones? New roads don’t just expand infrastructure; they also reduce pressure on existing ones. The Lagos section of the Coastal Highway has already diverted a significant amount of traffic from the Lekki-Epe Expressway. That’s one of the key benefits of creating alternative routes. Let’s retire the lazy attacks on new road projects. Existing roads are being rehabilitated, and new roads can and should be built alongside them. Development is not an either-or proposition.

@abfarmarena @lospectra_ Yes no doubt there has been improvement in their football, but to say that they are miles above the rest in Africa is an overkill. This is a team that couldnt beat neither Senegal nor Nigeria even when they were playing on their home tuff.
