The phrase “the serious moonlight” in Let’s Dance is my favourite thing David Bowie ever wrote

@BlackCasebook Yeah I mentioned this somewhere else but it's kinda funny for Nolan (not exactly the most adventurous director of images) to do an adaptation of what is one of the most visually descriptive stories ever. Auerbach said "everything is illuminated by an equal light"

The Odyssey trailer looks nice and all but it's a shame that every actor doesn't sound like the villains in Season 2 of The Wire

@regularaugust I think it's funny to choose to adapt one of the more visually descriptive vernacular epics because it's almost like the shooting script is already done

@filipefurtado @alexL_E_I Yeah not like Clockers by Richard Price is the sole responsibility (it being a big influence on Simon) but in that book nobody has any illusions about changing the system

@alexL_E_I That said, people often underplays Burns role because Simon is usually the one talking. It shouldn’t be a surprise that a TV show about law enforcement created by a former cop full opinions main conclusion is that authorities should listen more to guys just like him.

@bartlebytaco I had a big brained take about this involved the show realizing that not every character should be compromised by institutional discourse/values and goes like "oh right we're a tv show"

@Itsben1week it's funny! feels like the showrunners had a moment where they were like "alright let's do a silly scene now"

re omar (maybe this is obvious) i think he resembles more of an archetype from a western than anything—neither outlaw or sherif, but a renegade—and the show buys into that w his standoff with mouzone. just funny how it plays against the show's rep for gritty social verisimilitude

@jasonsb yeah the final season is honestly kinda bad, and the worst offender of this. agree the sopranos has way more depth on basically every level, but the wire does nice systems novel-like work in the second and fourth season imo

Adorno, 1939 on this Rembrandt self-portrait: “this painting seems to me to record a primal bourgeois experience. It could almost be called that of the law of value. Here the exchange of equivalents means: there is no happiness which is not paid for by an equal measure of sorrow”
