@BlackCasebook Yeah I mentioned this somewhere else but it's kinda funny for Nolan (not exactly the most adventurous director of images) to do an adaptation of what is one of the most visually descriptive stories ever. Auerbach said "everything is illuminated by an equal light"

@filipefurtado @alexL_E_I Yeah not like Clockers by Richard Price is the sole responsibility (it being a big influence on Simon) but in that book nobody has any illusions about changing the system

@alexL_E_I That said, people often underplays Burns role because Simon is usually the one talking. It shouldn’t be a surprise that a TV show about law enforcement created by a former cop full opinions main conclusion is that authorities should listen more to guys just like him.

it’s not so much that he doesn’t offer solutions—it’s that you have to wonder good a societal critic is when they have clear limits on their criticism

David Simon yelled at me for saying this but the problem with The Wire is that it perfectly breaks down how broken American society is but David Simon himself believed that the system can be fixed without major societal change so the shoe doesnt offer any solutions.

rewatched the wire during the early pandemic and i more than not agree with this. it was more cartoonish and schlocky than i remembered it being, though obviously still some great moments and story writing

re omar (maybe this is obvious) i think he resembles more of an archetype from a western than anything—neither outlaw or sherif, but a renegade—and the show buys into that w his standoff with mouzone. just funny how it plays against the show's rep for gritty social verisimilitude

@jasonsb yeah the final season is honestly kinda bad, and the worst offender of this. agree the sopranos has way more depth on basically every level, but the wire does nice systems novel-like work in the second and fourth season imo
