Tamil Nadu has the highest debt in India. ▶️ Total debt: ₹10.4 lakh crore ▶️ Debt is 29.2% of GSDP (only Andhra Pradesh is higher at 35.2%) Out of the state’s own revenue of ₹2,57,283 crore, around ₹69,114 crore (27%) is spent only on interest payments every year. New Finance Minister @KASengottaiyan should avoid taking more loans and instead focus on reducing debt step by step. There are many easy ways for the new government to increase revenue. The previous DMK government failed to implement them due to corruption and vested interests. ▶️ Even after multiple High Court orders, the DMK government did not fully digitise TASMAC operations. Proper digitisation can bring end-to-end tracking and reduce tax evasion. ▶️ Mining is one of the least taxed sectors in Tamil Nadu. A transparent and corruption-free mining policy can generate massive revenue for the government instead of benefiting illegal quarry operators. The new government can take inspiration from the Gujarat model, where debt was reduced from 22.5% to 17.9% over the last 10 years. In the past five years, the DMK government increased EB tariffs, property tax, registration charges, and road tax. Yet, they still added ₹4 lakh crore in new loans. As promised by the new CM, if the so-called “Stalin Sir Tax” of 30% corruption is removed, Tamil Nadu could save nearly ₹1.4 lakh crore every year. Now let’s see whether the new government truly reduces corruption or not.
