📊 Too much global development data still lives in spreadsheets. But modern analysis requires data acquisition as code. Today I’m pleased to share that the unicefData R package is now available on CRAN, providing direct programmatic access to the UNICEF Data Warehouse. Researchers, policymakers, and analysts can now retrieve 700+ internationally comparable indicators on children and women directly from R — enabling reproducible analytics, transparent workflows, and faster evidence generation. Install install.packages("unicefData") Example library(unicefData) df <- unicefData( indicator = "CME_MRY0T4", countries = c("BRA","USA","IND"), year = "2015:2023" ) Why this matters Reliable evidence depends not only on good data, but also on how easily that data can be accessed, reproduced, and reused. The unicefData package helps bridge the gap between official statistics and modern data science workflows by enabling: • Access to 700+ indicators across countries and years • Integration with reproducible research pipelines • Use of SDMX international statistical standards • Consistent interfaces across R, Python, and Stata Making official statistics more accessible, reproducible, and interoperable is an important step toward strengthening evidence for policies that improve outcomes for children. 📦 CRAN cran.r-project.org/package=unicef… #OpenData #OfficialStatistics #RStats #DataForChildren #ReproducibleResearch

Today, I received Dr. Aminu Yusuf, Chairman of the National Population Commission, at Lagos House, Marina. We discussed the need for accurate data in a city growing as rapidly as ours. Without a clear picture of how many people live in Lagos, we cannot plan effectively for the infrastructure and services our residents rely on. I assured Dr. Yusuf that Lagos is ready to support the Commission’s work. At the same time, we expect a process that truly reflects the reality of our population. Reliable numbers are essential if we are to ensure that every Lagosian receives the infrastructure and services they deserve.

Whether in health, education, environment, economy, agriculture, or development, GIS magnifies the impact of interventions by turning data into actionable spatial intelligence, knowledge that AI systems must also be trained to understand and leverage.

@emmaikumeh There could be more to what is aired. We are entitled to our opinions What I didn't find quite interesting in this matter is the public display of the man's name. If the father is the culprit, why bring in the children? Guess the sins of the father are visited upon his children.

Nigeria is a very funny country. We are celebrating that the head of a regulatory body was sacked, even though they said he resigned, but we basically know the President asked him to leave office; because of one man, Aliko Dangote. Aliko Dangote gave allegations that, to me, were not really substantial. Farouk Ahmed came out and cleared the air on the allegations and even said he gives EFCC and any other security agency the go-ahead to investigate the school fees being mentioned were being taken care of by his father as his trustee. If you do your investigation, some of the schools Dangote mentioned don't even exist. I see that a lot of Nigerians are excited that the Farouk Ahmed resigned. Now, I am not saying Abba Kyari, a former NNPC GMD was innocent but he was forced to resign because of one man, and today, Mr Farouk has been forced to resign because of one man. This is not how to grow an economy. Without even substantiating whether the allegations against Farouk Ahmed were correct, if you are asking him to resign based on any other thing it is fine, but because he ruffled the feathers of Aliko Dangote, he is now being asked to resign. I wonder what the next head of the regulatory board will do. That means he will not be able to go against Dangote, because if he does, Dangote will also come against him, come against his grandmother and every other of his family. This is one of the nonsense we keep talking about. This is not how a country is built. I expected that the Government would investigated those allegations, then come out to the public and tell us that after investigating these allegations, we found out that these allegations are true, and that on the basis of corruption he has been sacked. No investigation whatsoever, no communication from the Government to tell us this is why this or that. The next thing, they are telling us the man has resigned. It does not augur well. I pity the next regulatory head. If Dangote does not like you, you are gone, and then you tell me this is a serious nation.

@renoomokri The ethical use of AI, particularly in political communication, matters. Accuracy, authenticity, and public trust should always take precedence over convenience or aesthetics. Celebrating progress is commendable, but doing so responsibly and ethically is equally important.

@renoomokri While I appreciate the intent of highlighting progress made by the current administration, particularly the fact that Nigerians are not experiencing the usual December fuel scarcity.

For the third year in a row, President Tinubu gives Nigerians a December to remember! Today is exactly ten days to Christmas, and unlike before 2023, there is no fuel scarcity in any part of Nigeria. Throughout the length and breadth of this nation of 235 million people, fuel is plentiful, and at a cost of under ₦900, it is also affordable. Again, for the third December under President Tinubu, there is no fuel scarcity in Nigeria, and the price of petrol has reduced. This has never occurred under any previous administration. When it occurred for the second time last year, and I wrote about it exactly a year ago, some people criticised me, saying these were basic things. I quite agree. But oxygen is also a basic thing. That something is rudimentary does not mean it cannot be celebratory. Because we, as a people, have incredibly short memories, let me remind Nigerians of what used to happen around this time in previous years. Our people would be in queues at fuel stations, many of them sleeping overnight. Others would be there with Jerry cans. And then the media would report on stories of people's homes being burnt because of petrol stirred in such containers. Others who were not stormy enough to wait in line at fuel stations would buy black-market gasoline, and inevitably, there would be news bulletins about blown or knocked-out engines and exploding generators. Well, all that is in the past. Or, am I lying? Let us not underestimate the big difference small improvements make! If the availability of petrol and the reduction in its price were not such an important issue, why did these same people who pilloried me when I highlighted the issue also complain under previous governments when there was both petrol scarcity and a price hike in fuel in previous Decembers? As a people, let us learn to appreciate progress. We should not wait until Nigeria builds a rocket that lands on the moon before we pat our country on the back. If we complain when things go badly, then we should also commend when they operate well or even better than we expected. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as I drive into a petrol station in Abuja to buy fuel at a discounted price, I commend you for your policies that have turned Nigeria from the biggest fuel importer in Africa to the largest exporter of the same product in West Africa. Well done, Your Excellency! And for those who will lampoon me for praising the President for this achievement, please, first of all, conduct an AI search of your digital footprint. If in previous Decembers you ever posted a comment attacking the government for petrol scarcity and the unaffordability of the product, then search yourself and ask if you genuinely have the moral authority to censure me! @renoomokri That said, I personally hold a different view regarding the use of an AI-generated image of the President. Given that the President’s real images are readily accessible, especially to an appointed Ambassador, it would have been more appropriate to use an authentic photograph.
