With the respect to Charles de Gaulle, this is nonsense.
American troops have fled on the battlefield, abandoning major US cities to the enemy in the face of both future and sitting presidents.
Since the constitution was ratified, America has had three national capitals: New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.
All three of those cities were occupied by foreign enemies during the Revolutionary War or War of 1812.
So what does de Gaulle mean here, what is he actually trying to say:
America was not invaded in the 20th century, and has not experienced the mass death of a 20th century war at home. In that way, we have been very fortunate, and are quite different from France and Russia.
