Thought experiment: Imagine a magic pill. It dramatically reduces risk of cancer, heart and lung disease. It increases focus, attention and memory, and reduces stress and anxiety (so it's dependence-forming for some people). Some teens start using it. Should we prohibit it?

The Tobacco & Vapes Bill committee has heard oral evidence from a range of so-called stakeholders with a vested interest in its passage through the legislative process. The truth is that it was one of the most one-sided Bill Committee hearings ever to take place both in terms of the membership of the committee and those giving evidence. No representatives from the vaping industry. No representation from the millions of vapers. Not one MP who opposed the Bill on the Committee. The result: The Tobacco and Vapes Bill committee hearing turned into the ‘Chamber of Misinformation’. These are some of the worse examples of the misinformation presented to the committee during the evidence sessions on April 30 and May 1:

Dear Mr. Cunningham, unfortunately you have made some errors in your criticism of ZONNIC. First, ZONNIC is not advertised on TikTok. However, other cessation products are, including nicotine gums and lozenges, which you promote. Second, Imperial Tobacco Canada has mandated that all retailers of ZONNIC require age verification and store the product behind the counter in convenience stores. The gums and lozenges that you promote do not. Third, we believe that all cessation products, including those you promote, should be restricted to adults only. This should be our common goal. Fourth, ZONNIC is an essential, low-nicotine tool that can help cut smoking incidence and potentially reduce cancer rates in this country. If you are committed to helping Canadian smokers quit, nicotine replacement therapies must be available in retail locations where cigarettes are sold. It should be @cancersociety’s mission to celebrate this product, rather than calling for unreasonable restrictions. Let us instead work together to save lives.
