Jeff Bezos pays billions in taxes when he sells shares. Pretending otherwise is dishonest. And taking more of his money means less private philanthropy. Then the real debate becomes who should decide how he spends his money: You think you and your colleagues should decide where his money goes. I disagree.

I was flying a C-141 trip once that transited several Middle Eastern and Asian countries. Really cool mission and places. It was a classified State Department/CIA mission.
One of our stops was Souda Bay, Crete. After we landed and bused downtown, the 3 pilots decided to head out, explore, and grab something to eat.
We stopped at a place right on the marina. Beautiful spot. Setting sun, warm breezes, and the and sat outside at the marina. It was a gorgeous Greek evening. While we’re enjoying our meal, one of my buddies looked up and said, “hey, guys. Look, it’s Jacques Cousteau’s boat! The Calypso.”
It was. We walked over and chatted with the crew. They were in port for a while. Great guys. I ended up drinking way too much Ouzo that night. Ouch.

This interview with former Senator Ben Sasse is strong stuff.
He’s using the time he has left to speak honestly about life and politics, and a big part of his challenge to us is to find a way to repair our political conversation.
One of his main points is that the addiction to outrage that social media has fueled has done nothing to help us reach practical solutions to hard problems.
He's absolutely right about that, and I really respect that his final political project is conveying genuine hope and encouragement that we lift ourselves to meet this moment as friends, neighbors, and citizens.

This here is probably the single most important thing for anyone to understand about North Carolina's state government.
Our state legislature - the North Carolina General Assembly - writes every single law, every budget, nearly every regulation, and makes the overwhelming majority of personnel appointments in our state.
Taxes? The state legislature.
Water discharge regulations? The state legislature.
Voter registration? The state legislature.
School standards? The state legislature.
Road construction? The state legislature.
Drawing election districts? The state legislature.
Other state agencies may carry out and perform the statutes and rules the state legislature sets down, but it's always the state legislature that calls the tune. After all, they write the laws - not the Governor, not the Attorney General, not the courts.
Republicans have held complete and unbroken majority (often supermajority) control of the North Carolina state legislature for the last 15 years straight, because they gerrymandered the election maps to ensure they'll never lose.
