Once again, we had fun celebrating birthdays in the office! It was a moment to pause from our busy schedules and remind our teammates how special they are. Last week, we celebrated the September babies. They happen to be the bubbliest; we brought the cake, and they brought the energy. From the messages on the birthday cards, it’s clear that Esther Mkamori is not only the Head of Programs but also a mentor, leader, advisor, friend, and role model, truly so many good things in one. Ericah is the mood and room lighter, while Joy, just as her name suggests, is bubbly, and everyone notices when she’s not around. She’s also a hugger. Together, the three ladies make the office environment a joy to be in. Beyond their warmth, they’re all diligent workers. Happy birthday to our amazing Virgo ladies! @EricahMuema @JKagosh @mkamoriesther

Women and girls with disabilities face intersecting discrimination across many sectors, including the justice system, schools, hospitals, employment, transport systems, and social media. To address this systemic challenge, the United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK) and the Kenya Network of Women and Girls with Disabilities (@Kwwdnetwork ) convened women and girls with disabilities in Kenya to collect their views and experiences. This meeting was a direct response to the global call by the OHCHR and the #CRPD Committee to shape guidelines on intersectional discrimination. The collective voices and experiences of women and girls with disabilities are vital in guiding inclusive policies that both protect their rights and promote their leadership. #AccessToJustice #intersection

The silent followers are the ones who actually talk about you the most in a room of opportunities. Keep showing up for them. Keep helping them. Keep sharing those tips to them. You’re solving their problems even if they don’t shout about it. They see you. Build!

Persons with disabilities have the right to be treated with dignity and respect 💯
UDPK@UDPKenya

We express strong disapproval of the indignifying and degrading incident that took place in Bugoma county during Jukwaa la Usalama function , where MP John Waluke not only humiliated and demeaned a young person with a disability but also made prejudiced remarks suggesting that persons with disabilities do not have any capacity to serve in the police force in any role , reinforcing harmful stereotypes that exclude and deny persons with disabilities opportunities and dignity . This conduct stands in direct violation of Consistution of Kenya , which guarantees human dignity (Art 28) , equality (Art 27) , and the rights ( Art 54) . It also contravenes persons with disability Act 2025 and the CRPD . As a member of parliament John Waluke is entrusted with upholding these values and tenets , not undermine them through redicule , degrading displays and exclusionary rhetoric Kenyans with disabilities are equal citizens, rights-holders, and active contributors to national development. They serve in diverse capacities across our society, including within national security frameworks, where their participation strengthens institutions and fosters inclusivity. They deserve respect, opportunity, and recognition not ridicule or exclusion. UDPK has formally written to the Speaker of the National Assembly demanding accountability. Specifically calling for,👇 - A Public statement of solidarity from Parliament affirming the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities. - The institutionalization of disability Inclusion and Equality training for all Members of Parliament -A Formal apology from Hon. Waluke to Kenyans including to the disability community This incident must serve as a turning point. Parliament has the responsibility to demonstrate leadership by rejecting discrimination in all forms and standing firmly for dignity, equality, and inclusion @NGECKenya @Ncpwds @KKedipa @HonWetangula @NAssemblyKE @HakiKNCHR @Senate_KE @HonAmasonKingi @NPSOfficial_KE @NPSC_KE @PSCKenya

Our CEO Sally Nduta's ( @SallyNduta1 ) opinion piece on "Cost of Disability Inclusion" was featured on the Nation ( @NationAfrica ) Newspaper yesterday (17/07/2025). In the article, she commends the passage of the Persons with Disabilities Act 2025, but raises critical concerns about the Finance Act 2025—specifically, its lack of a dedicated budget and funding mechanisms for implementing disability inclusion. This includes essential support like assistive devices and rehabilitation services. Sally also presents compelling evidence of the economic cost of excluding persons with disabilities from national planning and budgeting. "Before this program, I had a business idea but no direction. Today, I have a plan, partners, and purpose." These are the words of a participant in the Inclusive Business program (Task Order 50 #T05O), a program that supports Micro entrepreneurs with disabilities to grow their businesses through capacity strengthening and mentorship. The program is designed to empower entrepreneurs with disabilities. Over the past few months, the InBusiness program brought together persons with disabilities, experienced facilitators, and organizations working for disability inclusion to strengthen the capacity of entrepreneurs with disabilities. During the last quarterly learning participants expressed their thoughts on What Went Right: 1. The program ran smoothly and delivered as promised. 2. It built trust and collaboration between OPDs (Organizations of Persons with Disabilities). 3. Participants gained practical business skills, boosting their confidence and ambition. 4. Facilitators were knowledgeable and engaging, ensuring every module made an impact. They also gave their recommendations: 1. Plan for long-term sustainability. 2. Domesticate disability policies to reflect real, local needs. 3. Budget specifically for both business and more social empowerment. 4. Standardize mentor training and align skill-building across the board. 5. Introduce before-and-after tracking tools to measure impact more clearly. @LftWKE @SallyNduta1

At the People Dialogue Festival #PDF Meru County version, we dived into the theme of inclusive and resilient economic development. Paul Mugi (@muginjoka ) , a legal intern at the United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK), shared insights on key legal frameworks that uphold economic empowerment for persons with disabilities. He broke down relevant provisions from: The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) The Constitution of Kenya, 2010 The newly enacted Persons with Disabilities Act, 2025 His contribution highlighted how these instruments provide a strong legal basis for inclusive economic participation and the urgent need to implement them effectively to ensure no one is left behind. @UraiaTrust @LftWKE @SallyNduta1
