This is not uniform across the whole of Scotland with ‘peripheral’ areas continuing 19th and 20th century long trend of depopulation and out-migration.
Our north Highland population has halved in the last two centuries whilst Scotland’s has doubled, with no abatement in sight.

now this starts to feel like more interesting commentary to me. at white collar jobs there's a lot of implicit pressure to grow the fuck up, because you're exposed to peers who manifestly have their shit together. used to be lower class people would have a kid and community members would push them to get their shit together too. older coworkers even at dead end jobs, church and other local communities, etc. but if these days the 27 yo teenagers working retail aren't having kids and basically have no older peers with their shit together in any meaningful way, what incentive do they have to do anything but keep watching the same anime in discord calls? who are you feeling social pressure from?

This article would be 1000% better if the writer actually spoke to and quoted the people it’s about. As it stands; it’s just a sneering overwritten bit of faux anthropology. Watching the US response to the impending loss of the war, I have realised that the Americans simply do not understand what Iran is. It is an enormous civilisational power with a huge, well-organised military. Many in the Trump admin seem to think its a janky Arab dictatorship.

Iran has more than 40 million men fit for military service, all of whom have been conscripted, trained and served in the armed services for 21 months. Some 1.4 million men reach military age per annum. For reference, Vietnam had no more than 10 million men of military age in 1965. US commitment of ground forces peaked at a half a million men. US armed strength was 1.88 million, 3X larger than 0.62 million today. Even if the US could field enough divisions in Iran, which it assuredly cannot (see rt), there is just no possibility of winning a counterinsurgency war in Iran. None. Zero. Nada. Not only is defeat certain if the US commits ground forces to occupy Iran, it will chew up the American army. It’s going to make Vietnam look like a cake walk. Can’t remember the name of the Substack author who wrote that any serious war will consume the American military and basically put it out of business for a decade. If the US commits large-scale ground forces to Iran, that wager becomes a near certainty.
