@MullenMulling @moodyangela @dockevinmcleod Can we challenge the need for money to become a doctor? It shouldn’t be barrier, especially in the shortage situation we are in.
English

@moodyangela @dockevinmcleod It would be interesting to know how many good quality pre-med students are available. If students applying don’t have the necessary smarts, drive, money, time, personality to be competent doctors, fast-tracking alone won’t solve that gap.
English

“Hello. Is this the Dean of UBC medicine?”
“Yes it is. How can I help you?”
“This is the minister of health. I know for 30 plus years under multiple governments as a province we haven’t been training enough doctors given our population growth. It’s become particularly bad the last few years. We need to change this now.”
“Well that’s not so easy. It takes 4 years of medical school and then 2 to 7 years of residency. Your government already announced some increases to medical training. And you announced Simon Fraser medical school is starting in 2026. Those grads will be ready come 2032 to 2035.”
“We struggle to find patients adequate care now. We can’t staff ERs. Is there any way we could speed this up?”
“There are many Canadians who grew up in communities here who have gone to other countries to do medical school because we didn’t have adequate training spaces. Places like Australia that have very high quality equivalent training. They want to come back but can’t because there are not enough residency spaces.”
“So if they came back the time line would be accelerated by 4 years?”
“Exactly. It costs around $100k per residency position. We could try to target critical areas like ER docs, anesthesiologists, family docs first. If we really put all hands on deck we could likely boost positions by 10% for July 2024 then another 15% for July 2025.”
“Let’s get this done. How do we know they will stay at the end of training?”
“Most positions for those coming back to Canada have an attached return of service. We fund the last part of their training and they in exchange work in a community with need for a period of time.”
“I sure wish we’d had this conversation sooner. There will be some bumps in the road to make this happen but let’s get this done.”

@LisbonMile @Teachers__Unite Could we please not devalue one group and the hard work they do while trying to promote another? It pits us against each other and that’s not where we need to be.

@ZainR @Garnet_2203 “Schools” in Ontario do teach about the responsibilities of levels government. Both my kids, now 20 & 17, learned about it somewhere between Gr. 4 and 7 and again in Grade 10.
English

@Garnet_2203 Schools need to teach more on civics and help kids understand the different levels of government and what they do so we don't get people like this.

@Teachers__Unite @Sflecce How about more front line workers to work directly with students and fewer people who have to justify their jobs by making up work for front line workers to do so everyone can check a box, fill in a report and make it seem like change is happening?

English

@munakadri What's GSN?? annoying use of #jargon, not on google 😣
English

2 announcements around March Break and no GSNs.
The last time it happened this way was when Lisa Thompson announced the massive class cuts over March Break.
Not good.

Another step forward to ensuring Ontario students can compete with the best & brightest anywhere. Today, we announced a new mandatory requirement for ALL students to take one Tech Ed course to graduate. This will open doors to good-paying jobs! tinyurl.com/3xfvj2us

@vfrantellizzi @MlleMaraldo @JBradshaw01 I have this one all the time and I’ve been teaching for 25 years in the high school I went to.

@MlleMaraldo @JBradshaw01 Yup. Had one last week. Couldn't find the classrooms 🤦🏻♀️

@brandok991 @maritstiles All public sector workers need to read Bill 124 & see that it applies for 3 years depending on when contracts expire. Ed workers have already had their max 1% incr as our contracts were among the first to expire in 2019. We all need to stick together, not turn on each other.
English

@maritstiles All the other public sector bargaining units were forced to swallow the max 1% allowable increase from bill 124.
If they offer the teachers more after telling nurses and public sector workers no… it won’t be disruptions from teachers they’ll need to deal with
English

A positive, productive bargaining process starts with listening & talking at the negotiating table, not drawing a line in the sand before negotiations even begin. #onted #onpoli

I'm sorry but if you actually appreciate the sacrifices that Ontario's nurses made during COVID, you will NOT vote for a party that has shown time & time again, even while in power during COVID, that they don’t care about nurses. You just won't. #onpoli

@fitz_meagan Sometimes when the MOE “disappears” it is so they can be replaced and we will presumably forget everything they have done before the next election rolls around. After all, the MOE is just a voice for the party or the premier.
