Asking citizens to prove they’re citizens is not a tax unless you think every ID or document requirement in society is a poll tax too. Also, claiming Republicans ‘can’t win on policy’ ignores reality. Republicans currently control the White House and made gains with working-class and minority voters in recent elections. The bigger question is simple: if voting in federal elections is reserved for U.S. citizens, why is verifying citizenship suddenly authoritarian? Election verification isn’t vote stripping. It’s confirming eligibility.

Democracy requires constant defense. It does not maintain itself. Republicans want to require citizenship documents to vote in federal elections. On its face, it sounds administrative. In practice, it would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters — disproportionately Black, brown, and low-income Americans. This is not about election integrity. There is no evidence of widespread non-citizen voting. This is about who gets to participate in democracy. I believe in a democracy that is accessible to every eligible citizen. Not just the ones who happen to have their papers. We will fight this legislation with everything we have.

You need proof of citizenship to get a passport, many government benefits, certain jobs, and immigration status. Requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections is not some radical concept. Saying ‘millions’ of eligible voters would be disenfranchised assumes those voters cannot obtain or already lack documentation proving citizenship. That claim is heavily disputed. Also, ‘there is no evidence’ is misleading. There have been documented cases of noncitizen registration and voting, though debates continue over scale. The argument is really about whether even small numbers justify stricter verification. If voting is reserved for citizens, verifying citizenship is election integrity. Pretending verification itself is suppression skips the core question: should citizenship be confirmed before casting a ballot in citizen-only elections?
