@D555555D @ArmandDoma @AlexHer59928433 It's fun that it boils down to ritualized murder involving the entire community, or being enslaved to the people that have reason to hate them the most.

@TonyMontana5309 @JosephPolitano To people confused by this reminder: 21 percent of US adults are illiterate. That doesnt necessarily mean they can't read, it means they lack that literacy skills to complete tasks that require comparing and contrasting information, paraphrasing, or making low-level inferences

if you take Trump's threat to put a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods seriously, one of the first results would be an immediate increase in gas prices, especially in the midwest—Canadian pipeline-transported crude feeds key refineries throughout the US

Did Democrats ever truly believe their rhetoric about Trump being a "fascist" — or was it more a cynical attempt to motivate and even shame Americans into voting against Trump in the absence of compelling reasons to vote for their candidate?

Something odd has happened. A “fascist” has risen to power in the world’s oldest democracy. Yet since Trump's victory, the language of autocratic doom has dissipated, a faint memory of a different era. Biden, after all, welcomed the would-be dictator to the White House. 🧵

@DawgsOnTop44 @GaryWinslett So it's natural I think for all the blame to lay at the feet of NAFTA even though trends were going that direction anyway, not many people actually remember what was happening in 70 and 80s.

@DawgsOnTop44 @GaryWinslett NAFTA was signed in 92 took effect in 94, although you might have seen adjustments start to take place before it took effect. So 30 years ago, for all practical purposes you'd need to be 50 minimum to have first hand knowledge of what happened pre and post. Probably closer to 60

There’s a question here between @arindube @ArmandDoma and @mattyglesias on whether trade liberalization costs Democrats support among the working class. The conventional wisdom is ‘yes’ but the trade politics scholarship is a lot less clear on that. 1/

@jbreezy1512 @MarcACaputo RFK Jr is crazy in a way that most MAGA types are crazy, Musk is crazy in a very weird frenzied way that is genuinely offputting. Case in point, hard to imagine a MAGA crazy trying to pretend to be the best Diablo 4 player.

@jbreezy1512 @MarcACaputo Other way around, Trump and RFK having a fallout with Musk. RFK can be congenial, Musk can only be smarmy. RFK also isnt trying to portray himself as the Shadow President.

@mattyglesias If you read the article you learn that it’s a package of income tax cuts with increased deductions (at the low end) and sales tax increases, which proponents believe will have no net impact on lower/middle income households. But keep clutching your pearls anyway.

it's really remarkable how strong the "trump doesn't really mean what he says" consensus is in rich businessman circles, no wonder he can't find one of them to be treasury secretary

@oliver_drk And to state the obvious, ceasefire deals are not a magic compulsion. There would be nothing really to prevent the entire situation from going hot again even if you try to pretend otherwise by labeling it permanent.
