Some personal news. I'm sad to report that my beloved father, Ed Harris, died on Sunday. He'd been ill for some time and developed an acute lung infection last week. I've shared remembrances of him with family and friends, but in this space, I just want to add two things.

@HannaLiubakova I read it was the reconnaissance platoon of the brigade. Second hand sources of course. A whole brigade is a bit unbelievable. Perhaps lost in translation or misinterpretation due to fog of war ? (a platoon less is good too!)

Valeri Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of #Ukraine, reported that an entire 74th motorized rifle brigade from Russia surrendered near Chernihiv. He posted a picture of the head of the brigade. Apparently, they were sent to Ukraine from the military drills

@coldinpublic @TadeuszGiczan Many conscripts may indeed just not want to fight, but if confirmed this was a Recon platoon, they could also have gotten too far from the main unit and got cut off, then surrendered due to lack of viable options.

An entire reconnaissance platoon of Russia's 74th Motor Rifle Brigade surrendered near Chernihiv, the Ukrainian Armed Forces' commander-in-chief reports.

Just received a rejection from a postdoc application. They had 850 applicants for 5 slots. Fun fact: they charged $40 to apply meaning they made $34k on application fees!

@jtsveigdalen I am with the don't give up crowd, as I've seen the value of women trail blazers who had it hard in an organization, but gosh the women who followed them were respected, treated as equals. So your struggles are not in vain. At the same time, new things are always great!

@DJCarroll101 @THEAndrewWells @RepAdamSchiff I hear where you are coming from, but I for one do not want people to just "manage", I want them to thrive. The debt overhang from student loans inhibits any forward planning and risk taking in the context of career and financial setback and from the Great recession plus Covid.

Millions of young people will soon have to begin making student loan payments again. Payments they cannot afford. We need to continue the freeze on repayments until the pandemic is over. Better yet, we should cancel $50,000 in debt for every student.
