Who was the most underrated military commander or officer that the Confederates never really used to their advantage?

"The modern history of political evangelicalism is riddled with the same kind of story: A powerful man gains a following by casting himself as the heroic warrior against the heretical and the godless. When he uses his power and fame to indulge his basest desires, he treats exposure as an attack and justice as persecution." nytimes.com/2026/05/14/opi…

@megbasham @christopherrufo My reading is that God is allowing the Boy and Man to suffer, but he sets limits on that suffering. That is very similar to the Book of Job. Only suffering to a point.

@megbasham @christopherrufo My reading of The Road is that God is the silent character in the book. When the Man and Boy are at their lowest on a few occasions, suddenly they stumble on help. It is almost like God is giving them a push forward on their journey. I read it as a very Christian novel.

I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.

About to start Blood Meridian for the first time. Give me all your best advice.

@PhilNvestigates Daggum, Megan comes with the receipts. Why can't people just counter her arguments when they disagree with her? Why do they always have to just attack her personally? She gets her receipts from public sources.

Sometimes the online discourse becomes so toxic that you just have to use the “block” button - even with people who hold themselves out as Christians. (Link below)

It's not a wise choice no matter how you slice it. BUT I read somewhere that a car dealer hosted his draft party and gifted him the two cars. To the larger point in terms of cultural difference: Jeff George, the No. 1 pick in the 1990 NFL Draft. His dad was a high school teacher and baseball coach. His mom a grade-school secretary. Lived in a very modest home on the far eastside of Indianapolis. Shag carpet in the living room. The entire neighborhood gentrified black over the course of 30 years. Jeff's dad (mom died of cancer in 2010) moved out of that house two years ago. They raised three boys in that house and never wanted to leave it despite Jeff's willingness and desire to move them somewhere "nice." His parents never wanted to be a burden and always an asset. I use the George family as an example because I witnessed this with my own eyes. Some people see the NFL draft as a family/friends winning lottery ticket from God. Other people see it as another blessing God bestowed on their child.

🚨🚨THIS IS INSANE🚨🚨 #Chiefs 29th overall pick Peter Woods purchased multiple Maserati SUVs for his mother & sister last night after he was drafted. Woods spent $200,000+ on the cars. Peter will only make 2.4 million per year after taxes. 😳😳😳

#Falcons DE James Pearce Jr. is expected to have all charges dismissed if he completes a Florida state program that would include therapy and staying out of trouble for six months, per @AndySlater. Attorney Yale Sanford says the victim, Rickea Jackson, and police also agreed to the resolution.

Two things: 1. Mike Vrabel’s job shouldn’t be in remote jeopardy over this. 2. Dianna Russini can no longer work as a “reporter.” She can do sports media, but it will 100% have to be as an opinion person. She may, or may not, be good at that. I have no idea.

I don’t buy the spouse argument. Going public like this blows you and your spouse up. Not to mention your family. Just feels unlikely to me. This still feels like another NFL team hit to me.

@NeilShenvi “His (Talarico) denial of the exclusivity of Christ” is where French completely loses me, given that French is holding him up as a Christian example. This is not a policy difference; it is absolutely fundamental to whether you are a Christian or not.

The question then becomes empirical not metaphysical: how likely are these outcomes? Talrico: French praised Talrico's decency and "Christian behavior" while Stuckey pointed not only to his affirmation of abortion/LGBTQ+ but also his denial of the exclusivity of Christ. 7/

I *highly* recommend this conversation between @conservmillen and @DavidAFrench. We need more public dialogue and less sneering, especially from Christians. My impressions: 1) The sheer volume of their agreement on various topics was noteworthy ("agree" was used 66 times!) 1/

Former LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier underwent tests at the NFL combine that revealed a cyst on his spine — the root cause of the persistent oblique pain that derailed his 2025 season, sources say. The cyst was pressing on a nerve, causing discomfort in Nussmeier’s oblique. He has been asymptomatic since just prior to the Senior Bowl and all throughout the draft process; if that changes down the road, Nussmeier could undergo a minimally invasive procedure and miss just 2-3 weeks while stitches heal. Either way, doctors say, there is no short- or long-term risk for Nussmeier, who is projected a mid-round pick in this week’s NFL Draft.

@AndrewTWalker I kept thinking about J. Gresham Machen's book Christianity and Liberalism. French has migrated into progressive theology, not just progressive politics. There is Christianity and then there is liberalism (theologically, not politically) and they are two different religions.

Watched the French-Stuckey debate. My main takeaway: The whole debate centered upon a truth-emotion continuum. I think Allie Beth came out ahead for one main reason that colors every issue debated: She indexes her understanding of emotion and empathy on a biblical axis, whereas French elevates emotion and empathy to a disproportionate degree. The consequence is to unmoor emotion from truth. There's simply a difference in rhetorical strategy: Stuckey focuses more on logos; French on pathos. Along those lines, another reason I think Allie Beth had the stronger hand is that she refuses to play the game of pitting love against truth (1 Cor. 13:6; Eph. 4:15). She's no less interested in kindness or empathy, but properly indexed by Scripture. French's focus on catering to emotional equilibrium (and thus hewing to progressive niceties) requires him to blur biblical categories. Biblical ethics requires both logos and pathos, but our loves must be ordered and governed with a proper foundation. And notably, French's empathy tends in one direction, toward those to his left. In short, Allie Beth focused on objectivity, reason, and right and wrong as the grounds of what constitutes love and kindness, whereas French's instinct is to defer to emotion and aesthetics.

Andrew Wilson claims to hate feminism but yet repeatedly shows he has the same view of biblical womanhood that feminists do. He denigrates homemaking in the same fashion Chelsea Handler would. You cannot claim to be against feminism while scoffing at motherhood & homemaking as less than. You either appreciate God’s design for women, or you have contempt for it, and here, Andrew clearly had contempt for it. The burden that men carry is much greater than the burden women carry in many areas—thats true—but the same can be said in reverse. Stop making everything a competition between the sexes, otherwise it is just two sides of the same god-hating coin.
