It’s OK to admit that school closures during the pandemic had serious downsides. Many kids paid the price. We should be willing to reflect and learn from it.

Anonymous I’m a school nurse. We have a rule. Kids without lunch money get a cold cheese sandwich. Nothing else. It’s policy. This boy came in one Wednesday. Sixth grader. Stomach pain he said. I’ve been doing this twenty years. I know real stomach pain and I know hunger. “When did you last eat?” He looked at the floor. “Yesterday lunch.” Sent him to the cafeteria with a note. Told them to give him a full hot meal. Pasta. Salad. Milk. The works. Cafeteria lady looked at my note. Looked at me. Gave him the tray without a word. He ate like he hadn’t seen food in days. Probably hadn’t. Came back to my office after. “Am I in trouble?” “For what?” “For eating.” “That’s what food is for.” Started keeping granola bars, peanut butter crackers, juice boxes in my bottom drawer. For kids who come in with headaches that are really hunger. Stomachaches that are really empty. I’m not supposed to. Technically against policy. Don’t care. Told my principal once. She looked at me for a long moment..... Opened her desk drawer. Showed me her stash. Crackers. Fruit snacks. Applesauce. “What drawer?” she said. We never spoke of it again. That sixth grader is in high school now. Came to find me last spring. “I just wanted you to know I’m okay. And that I remembered. I always will.” He volunteers at a food bank on weekends. Has since he was thirteen. Best granola bars I ever bought.

Men are quick to say "Not all men." Until... - Their wife has a male best friend. - Their girlfriend grabs lunch with a male coworker. - A man starts chatting with their teenage daughter at the mall. - They have a baby girl and suddenly see the world differently. Then, all of a sudden, they know men. They know the risks. They know why women are cautious. Funny how that works.

How in the world did it ever become normal to provide teachers with such a disgracefully short time to eat lunch?!

@TheMaineWonk I always find it funny when they list the wars. Unless you were enlisted, you felt zero impact from Iraq or Afghanistan wars. The entire workforce changed because of how many people were off to war during WW2. People were being drafted in previous generations. C’mon.

The United States of America and Israel has just bombed a school full of students in Iran. ~40 students killed and 48 injured. This violates Article 52 of Additional Protocol (I) Geneva Conventions, but international law clearly doesn’t apply to the U.S. and Israel.

Did you know? Doctors can refuse service if they feel they cannot do so safely. Should teachers have the right to refuse services to students who are consistently violent and whom we believe are a threat to our safety, as well as the safety of other students?

@persianmama111 Yes, evil. They have always been evil and I saw this as a kid but let my adult self be convinced otherwise. I should have listened to my younger self. People are just nasty and vile all around and they always have been.

I think the hardest part of the political climate right now is realizing how many people around me are actually evil. Not stupid. Not misinformed. Just blatantly enjoying and relishing in the suffering of other human beings.

Trump didn’t even acknowledge MLK Day. No statement. No tribute. Nothing. That’s not a mistake. That’s the point.

My sister was assisting with a pediatric surgery when the male surgeon told a crude sexual joke about the patient's parents. Room chuckled awkwardly; she stayed silent, focused on the kid. He called her out mid-case: "Why no laugh?" She said, "I'm here for the patient, not that." He complained she "lacked team spirit" & requested she never be assigned to his OR again. So no, it's not women ruining workplaces....it's the fragile ego of men!
