@Silk_Scribbler I doted on his works. Sadly never met him. He had such a swashbuckling approach and ooodles of charm. Where are his likes today- and only silence answers.

Patrick Leigh Fermor DSO was the C20th answer to Byron. Born in 1915, he decided to walk from Holland to Istanbul in 1933. Surviving mainly on charm and good looks, he traversed mainland Europe sometimes sleeping in barns other times in the grandest baronial castles. He would return to the European theatre in WW2 as an SOE agent.

@TheStephenRalph I had this experience last week where the nurse talked over my head to my carer. I waved my arms and explained “I was there and charging on all cylinders”. She ignored me until I insisted she stood in front of me and addressed ME. How hard can it be to be respectful and caring.

Afternoon All. So, yesterday afternoon at meal time, I was wondering if Mum was going to have her energy drink.
I went and found a nurse who said she'd ask Mum's nurse to come and see us.
That nurse duly arrived and began talking about Mum as though Mum wasn't in the room.
She said that Mum had refused her lunch drink. I asked the flavour. The nurse replied "hazelnut".
The nurse then said that Mum had refused it due to her dementia.
I replied that Mum didn't like the hazelnut flavour. The nurse replied asking me if I'd like to try giving her the drink? I replied that as Mum didn't like hazelnut flavour that it would be pointless. 🙄
I asked if there was an alternative flavour. She replied that this was all that had been sent up.
I then asked why nobody had asked me for Mum's food and flavour preferences. She had no answer and left.
Shortly after I went to the ward desk and asked for a piece of paper so that I could list Mum's food and flavour preferences as I had done on the previous ward.
I also made a point of saying that I had asked numerous nurses and doctors not to use the word "dementia" in front of my Mum because Mum would be very upset.
Also said that as Mum is hard of hearing, it would make Mum seem more confused than she actually is.
All I got back from the nurse was a vacant smile. 😣
I have met some excellent nurses on Mum's ward but there are always a few who make the wrong assumptions and treat Mum like she's wholly incompetent and incapable.
Yesterday I was talking with Mum about the budget and that I could hear the song "Road to Nowhere" at the end of Downing Street when Jeremy Hunt was speaking outside No. 11.
Mum though that was pretty accurate and chuckled. I said it was probably the great work of @snb19692 and she approved. 💪🏻
So, my rule of thumb is to treat any adult patient with respect as an adult. I never talked about a patient's diagnosis as if they were not there when I was a radiographer.
Especially so if their diagnosis involved dementia or mental illness or anything that could be sensitive or subjective. It just isn't right.
Nurses and other professionals should know this. 😣

@skybluespeck @ChrisGPackham @MailOnline @Telegraph Rot! Most if not all do! You’re thinking of the French who won’t.
English

@ChrisGPackham @MailOnline @Telegraph Sick of hearing ‘worthy’ farmers opine that “they are just custodians of the land” and “live as if you'll die tomorrow, farm as if you'll live for ever” etc THEN the minute they're asked to keep just 10% of their land for biodiversity, they're up in arms!
English

Wake up @MailOnline @Telegraph protestors are blocking roads , people are missing hospital appointments , funerals , emergency services can’t get through ! Here’s some epithets for you ‘Farmo-mob’ , ‘Farmo-loons’ , ‘Farmo-zealots’ . C’mon call for them all to be locked up forever ! You wouldn’t want to accused of hypocrisy !

@yaakovkatz @EylonALevy @BBCWorld @IDF @ICRC How come no mention made of video of rubble filled mining trucks being shunted through the hospital to help bar the door by a team of fit young Hamas men being ordered around by another obvs leader. This clip vanished off air later on with no comment.
English

Just spoke with @BBCWorld about the @IDF operation in Nasser Hospital. Was asked if I thought it was okay that Israel raided a hospital. Of course, I said especially when considering that Israel gave notice ahead of time. The question we should be asking is why does the @ICRC think it’s okay that Hamas terrorists hide inside hospitals. Just because you’re in a hospital doesn’t mean you have immunity.

@paul_bindweed @devilscustard Good grief! The greedy fools. Which council?
English

@devilscustard There must be some nice fat envelopes changing hands. Theyre building another estate on a water meadow not far from here.
They had to stop for a while as everything was underwater, but off they went again when the floods subsided.

@fugitiveink Smashing article. Encapsulated Holbein, and his work excellently.I’ve always thought his faces quintessentially English and to be seen even now. I dote on the Queen’s Gallery but am sadly trapped at home and you fed my imagination.Thanks.

The Stripping of the Altars will always be, for me, the gold standard of what a book about the history of religion should be - it’s the horizon I’m consciously or unconsciously striving towards, in all my writing

This is one of those books which hardly ever sells in the shop, isn’t on trend, but is absolutely, definitely, one of the best history books out there for the subject it covers. So it stays. Waiting for the right customer on the right day:

@JakeWSimons @DanielJHannan Thankfully, Britain is an Island far from Russia. War and destruction can't reach Britain easily. UK will get plenty of time to re-arm.
English

‘Our fathers were taught that Britain was a great country, a bastion of freedom, a place worth dying for. Our sons are taught that it is a nation of slavers and racists, and that the best way to escape that poisoned patrimony is to transcend British patriotism.’
Important @Telegraph column by @DanielJHannan, warning that, ‘Unless we rearm, we condemn ourselves, not just to a war, but to losing it.’

@devilscustard @BlicklingHallNT What does the Estate Manager have to say?
English

Why is the farmer allowed to plough so close to this veteran tree at @BlicklingHallNT ? The crop yield would be low due to over shadow and the tree roots and Mycorrhizal fungi are damaged by the plough. There is no winner! #GiveTheTreesSpace
