Slogans do not produce community safety. Slogans cause fear and division in our communities. We together can reimagine our communities and build new modes of security and safety without causing more harm and without building more cages.

This poll in today’s Guardian captures, I think, the true nature of Australians and also the path ahead.
A truthful and still celebratory and positive path to a fuller nationhood.
A reconciled country, at ease with its past, having fully dealt with its injustices, and celebratory of the modern Australian society that we all enjoy.
And while we must all continue to work to improve so that it is equally welcoming for everyone without barriers, to call ourselves Australian is something special.
As we see, the majority of all age groups want to acknowledge both the positive, and negative elements of our colonial history.
That’s very important. We want the truth. And the truth brings opportunities for justice and healing.
And by refusing to acknowledge the injustices of our past, we force advocates to the periphery and ensure that the only form of engagement is protest. As we saw in recent days.
This has continued for several hundred years, and will continue until we realise that accepting important truths is a national strength, not a weakness.
It does not undermine the nature of Australia, as some say. It’s not a view of history that cannot recognise the wonderful parts. These are cynical arguments to try to silence the voices of many of our communities and to be dishonest with ourselves.
Truth enriches our understanding, reinforces our pride in that we are able to measure against what we see as acceptable or unjust, and allows us to walk forward together.
As I’ve said many times and in recent days, the British monarchy and UK Starmer Government are part of this as yet untold history, and should also be equally and fully accountable to it.
Irrespective, it’s time to walk our own path.

Queensland LNP’s ‘fresh start’ for youth detention is just a cruel repackaging of failed punitive policies.

I had my latest MRI scan today looking for recurrent tumour (or complications of treatment). I expect I’ll receive the results later this week.
Incredibly it is now about 10 months since my supposedly incurable #glioblastoma was initially detected when I had a seizure in #Poland after lecturing for my friend & colleague Dr Artur Zembowicz (@Dermpedia). Thankfully my wife Katie was with me when I had the first seizure, and this probably saved my life.
Feel free to cross your fingers & toes with me for a moment whilst we wait to hear my scan results!
