It’s time to accept professional golf has changed forever and the sport grew up on is now gone due to money. I will always respect and consider the Masters the most hallowed 4 days in all of sports. But what it’s turning into feels like a corporate event. I understand these things aren’t cheap and I’m not an expert on the financial situation at AGNC but clearly due to money it seems the reverence has faded. Augusta National Golf Club is not meant to be seen this much on TV, just as I believe Cypress Point should have never been on television and should never see television ever again. In order to keep history and tradition, some places need to stay hallowed. It all comes back to money. It’s why the NFL is not great anymore. It’s oversaturated and too many games in too many days but it pays more money so who cares? The Masters is supposed to feel like a very 4 special days. Now it’s feels like weeks straight on TV. Every single podcaster breaks down every single possible angle and podcasts who I usually enjoy are tweeting out during the tournament how a certain bunker shouldn’t be there because an architect said so 80 years ago. Let me just enjoy 4 days of golf stop criticizing the course on twitter during the tournament just so your podcast has content. Why is Augusta showing me videos of Min Woo Lee cooking food? How on earth did Jason Kelce and Kevin Hart get approved? I was vocal about not letting Pat on but he would have been much better than them and probably more respectful. Real golf fans and people who respect tradition and the history of the game don’t give a crap about any of this. We hate it. . We know it’s not healthy for the longevity of what golf is and what it stands for. You could say “well just don’t consume it.” but other people do consume all the content put out about it and that’s how they learn about the game of golf. By podcasters, YouTubers, and anyone else who makes money from golf off clicks. Maybe new fans would respect the game more if they became a fan of golf through watching live shots on TV and understanding it’s an art and not a reality show. I watched PGA Tour golf for 18 months before I started to play golf and I enjoy playing because of the challenge the sport brings and how to properly act a golf course. Not because Bobby Does Sports films a video with LeBron James with a billion cuss words in it. (I like LeBron) Is growing the game of golf good? Sure. But the Masters does not need grown at all. Not everything that is special in sports needs change. Get rid of the drive chip and putt at least for TV, we don’t need to see the par 3 contest. But hey, they need the #money. Professional golf (especially the Masters) at its core is playing at the course in a gentleman’s way. Dressing proper, being a good sportsman, respecting the ones that came before, carrying on history, etc. Call me an old head all you want. But seriously, you can have all the social media, big letter hats, YouTubers, celebrities, you name it. You can have it all at every single golf tournament the other 51 weeks of the year but get it the out of the freaking Masters. Shrink the hell out of the game Fred Ridley. Ban them all. Delete the social media accounts for the Masters. People who care about golf and the Masters will put in the time and effort to keep up with up with the tournament through proper ways and that is how you grow real fans who will always respect the tournament for what it is. Will you have more fans this way? No but at least you will have proper fans who keep the history and tradition of The Masters living on. @TheMasters @gfienberg17 😂
