This "debate" about Nadav Lapid and the boycott is ridiculous. There's no debate. It's not "complicated". If you accept Israeli state money you're subject to boycott. "Oh but he's a good guy 😭". I don't care. No one cares. The boycott has nothing to do with your views or his

You have infinitely more in common with the average person in Cuba, Iran, Lebanon or Palestine than you have with the world’s first trillionaire.

Israel is kind of like the OJ Trial for Jewish people. Deep down inside everybody knows that country is guilty as sin but then some people are like, because of history maybe we’ll let em have this one. At least that seems to be the German posture.

@_microbudgetpod Sorry, but the joy of creating doesn't pay the rent or health care bills. Only rich kids can do art for no money

The best part about being a microbudget filmmaker and making films for fun, is the fact that your art doesn’t have to generate a “return on investment”. you aren’t at the whim of audience approval, you simply can create for the joy of creating.

This isn't hard: Condemn Israel’s genocide without equivocation. Israel’s violent ethnic cleansing of Palestine is wrong. This is simple and any leader should be able to say so. The fact my colleague cannot bring herself to say that is concerning.

This isn't hard: Condemn violence without equivocation. The reported planned violence and intimidation at the University of Michigan is wrong. This is simple and any leader should be able to say so. The fact my opponent cannot bring himself to say that is concerning.

@megataros @bradmiska Sure, but while there are writers who use complicated (and not pretentious) stories like Charlie Kaufman, Faulkner, and others most complication lies within the story & characters as with Henry James and Shakespeare who literally took others' stories as he did for Romeo & Juliet

@JackSutpen @bradmiska Right but the story itself isn’t complicated. It’s not even new. We’ve seen “be careful what you wish for” stories plenty of times before. What you’re saying is what I mean by “done well.” A thorough, thoughtful exploration of human desire wrapped in an easily relatable story.

It’s weird how many accounts keep farming engagement by arguing that Bear is the villain in Obsession. Yes, obviously he is. Who are they even arguing with? Has anyone actually claimed Nikki is the villain? I haven’t seen a single person make that argument, yet people keep acting like they’re bravely correcting some widespread misconception that doesn’t seem to exist. Clowns.

People have built their entire identities around their positions on the Israel-Palestine conflict so it becomes near impossible to have reasonable discussions on the topic.

Disclosure Day isn't a Spielberg movie, it's a Weirdberg movie. Weirdberg made Terminal, Hook, 1941, Always, Crystal Skull, War Horse. Weirdberg has all the skills of Spielberg, but is more sentimental and slapstick. I dig Weirdberg and love when he emerges to rile the natives.

@blewis1103 I don't have to dial down anything as I never turned it up; I was just stating facts, so the one who needs to dial things down is you, particularly since you admit my take was fair And if it's not aligned with the real world, how does it have relevance?

@JackSutpen Ok, you can dial it down a bit, because I said I understood where you were coming from and that it’s a fair take. I don’t think a film has to be fully aligned to our world to matter in some way. If you disagree, then we can agree to disagree.

“I don’t think you lost your faith in God…you lost your faith in people.” I vibed with Disclosure Day, Spielberg’s 2.5 hr thesis that humanity can handle what we supposedly can’t. Beautifully directed and acted, slightly overwritten, very captivating. Courtney Grace is MVP.

Lotta folks calling DISCLOSURE DAY Spielberg’s TENET, and I can vibe with that. But you also have to throw INCEPTION in there, too. The sublime power of image + information working in tandem to move the soul, as in cinema.

@JorCru You don't have to morph into other people, but if your'e going to try to make a film about humanity that understands the rest of humanity, you need to research and get to know people beyond your age group and ethnic group...and gender and sexuality

@filmbitten Really, then why not address actual human lack of empathy like the Gaza genocide by the apartheid Israel ethno-state he supports? If the world can't get together to stop this, or even stop helping it, how can we expect people to get together over care for humans?

spielberg made a movie about how humanity needs to listen to & empathize with each other before we destroy ourselves and disguised it as an alien movie

I think this year will be a massive blue wave so it may not matter anyway but it seems after 2024 where the Democratic coalition fractured over Gaza in Michigan it would be a bad idea to nominate Haley Stevens.

@blewis1103 Humans have proven they're greatly incapable of extending compassion to they're fellow humans, why would they do so to aliens?

I thought Colin Firth’s point was that humanity wasn’t capable of extending compassion to aliens (or aliens didn’t deserve it) and that Colman Domingo’s point was that we deserved the opportunity to try. I’m cynical about our capacity for compassion but I understand the intent.
rayen@rayon_film

I really had an issue with how people were so emotional towards the alien in any given situation cause it just wasn’t warranted in any way in the movie

@blewis1103 What do you mean "hard realism"? If it has no relevance to the real world, what's the point? It would be like having a film during the Nazi Holocaust with aliens appearing and everyone going kumbaya when the real world shows that's not and wouldn't be the case

@JackSutpen I don’t necessarily think that Spielberg is seeking hard realism with our current world but I can see how that can take you out of the film. That’s fair.
