Our leadership, led by Executive Director Dr. Jackson Orem @JacksonOrem, this week held a strategic meeting with the leadership of Mbarara University of Science and Technology @MbararaUST , led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika @PbyakikaPauline, to advance plans for the establishment of the UCI–Mbarara Cancer Center. During the meeting, MUST pledged to allocate 8.5 acres of land for the development of a comprehensive regional cancer center that will offer treatment, research, and training services. The center is designed to bring world-class cancer care closer to people in western Uganda and neighboring regions, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to Kampala. Funding for the project, totaling USD 30 million, has been secured by the Government of Uganda. The investment will cover construction, equipping, and capacity building to ensure the new center meets international standards of oncology care. Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Jackson Orem, Executive Director of UCI, commended MUST for its collaboration and commitment to improving health outcomes. “This partnership represents a critical milestone in our effort to decentralize cancer services and strengthen regional capacity for cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research,” said Dr. Orem. “With this center, we are one step closer to achieving equitable access to quality cancer care for all Ugandans.” In her remarks, Prof. Pauline Byakika-Kibwika, Vice Chancellor of MUST, reaffirmed the University’s dedication to supporting national health priorities. “MUST is proud to partner with the Uganda Cancer Institute and Mbarara Regional referral hospital in establishing this landmark facility,” said Prof. Byakika-Kibwika. “Beyond improving service delivery, the center will serve as a hub for training and research—empowering the next generation of cancer specialists in Uganda.” Adding his voice,Dr. Deus Twesigye, the Ag. Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, welcomed the project as a timely boost to the regional health system. “We see many patients presenting with cancers at the regional referral though the clinic space given is limited” said Dr. Twesigye. “The establishment of this center will greatly enhance early detection, timely treatment, and referral efficiency across the region.” Construction of the center is expected to commence in the next Financial Year, following completion of all preparatory works. #FightCancerUg #CancerAwareness

Cervical cancer remains a major public health concern in Uganda and continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related illness and death among women. The high burden of this disease underscores the urgent need to strengthen early detection, prevention, and treatment services as part of the country’s broader commitment to reducing the impact of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) on public health. In pursuit of this goal, UCI in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) is implementing the National Cancer Management and Capacity Building Project in Uganda (CANCAP UG), The project aims to enhance national capacity for cancer prevention and control through improved infrastructure, strengthened health workers’ skills, and expanded access to quality screening and treatment services. Through this intervention, cervical cancer screening services have been established in 20 health facilities across Kampala City, Mbarara City, and Mbarara District. To further strengthen the continuity and quality of these services, KOFIH has provided additional equipment and essential consumables for use in the designated facilities. These partners are officially delivering and hand over the items according to the following schedule: - Mbarara City Headquarters: November 6, 2025 – 9:00 a.m. - Mbarara District Headquarters: November 6, 2025 – 12:00 noon - Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital: November 7, 2025 – 9:00 a.m. - Kampala Capital City Authority (City Hall): November 12, 2025 – 9:00 a.m. Leaders Commend Strengthened Partnership Dr. Nixon Niyonzima, Head of Research and Training at the Uganda Cancer Institute, said: “This partnership with KOFIH and the Ministry of Health represents a critical step toward early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. By expanding screening services and strengthening local capacity, we are improving access to early detection, giving women a better chance at surviving and thriving.” Mr. Eunhyeok LEE –Program Manager, Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH): “Our commitment to Uganda’s cancer control efforts is rooted in partnership and sustainability. These supplies and equipment are meant to ensure continuity of quality services, especially in underserved areas.” Mbarara District leaders: “We welcome this support as a timely intervention for our communities. Cervical cancer affects many women silently, and this initiative will help us detect cases earlier and save more lives.” The DHO emphasized: “These resources will greatly improve our ability to deliver quality screening and follow-up care. We are committed to ensuring that this equipment is used effectively for the benefit of our people.” This initiative marks another significant step in Uganda’s efforts to ensure that women across the country have access to life-saving cancer prevention and screening services. #FightCancerUg #CervicalCancerAwareness

In this day and age, this is how you sell Uganda. Only problem: the people who allocate resources and have real power have their own people who just can’t seem to think strategically or can’t execute their way out of a wet paper bag. We are left with a misalignment of resources and ideas. That video sells gorillas better than some expensive campaigns I’ve seen.
