Growing up, I often enjoyed Ayeil while watching over family goats in the village. We would sometimes bury the green fruits in the ground, and the next day they'd be perfectly ripe! However, squirrels and other animals loved them too, leading to some surprising discoveries 🌳✨ Kunyuk (Ayiel) - A cherished wild fruit in the Dinka dialect of Yirol! Known as "vitex doniana sweet" or black plum (gbif.org), this delightful fruit starts off green before ripening into a sweet, black treat. Collecting Ayeil can be an adventurous task; some boys have even fallen from trees while trying to reach the fruit or encountered snakes lurking among the branches. Currently in season from May to July, tasting Ayiel again brought back vibrant memories of my childhood walks through the forests of Yirol. Today, while driving between Anuol and Atit, I spotted children tending to goats and cows, and many shared their excitement about enjoying Ayiel, showing me their prized collections.
