Alexandre Cabanel was 24 years old when he painted L'Ange Dechu (The Fallen Angel) in 1847. Cabanel's inspiration for this work was John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost (1667) and the fallen angels: Moloch, Belial, Mulciber, Mammon and Beelzebub. In his painting, we see the angel who has fallen from grace and has been banished by God.
