Mythbusting The expectations of the fans is all well and good until you realize that we pretty much stopped operating like that under Roman as well after we won the UCL in 2012. How many times did Chelsea sign an established world class superstar under Roman post 2012? Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas in 2014 and Romelu Lukaku in 2021 were literally the only ones we signed. Every other player we signed were either decent players we hoped would explode here (Kanté, Pulisic etc), average signings to make up numbers(Drinkwater, Barkley etc) or trying to sign young players with a horrible hit rate(Bakayoko, Werner, M. Sarr etc). Since 2012 we spent €747m on the following players alone: Victor Moses Marko Marin Wallace Marco van Ginkel Juan Cuadrado Loic Remy Abdul Baba Rahman Kenedy Radamel Falcao(loan) Michael Hector Matt Miazga Nathan Papy Djilobodji Michy Batshuayi Alvaro Morata Tiemoue Bakayoko Danny Drinkwater Davide Zappacosta Emerson Ross Barkley Kepa Arrizabalaga Gonzalo Higuain(loan) Timo Werner Hakim Ziyech Saul Niguez(loan) Our coaches in this time ranged from Andre Villas Boas, Roberto di Matteo and Rafa Benitez to Maurizio Sarri and Frank Lampard as much as Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel – who wasn't even regarded as world class prior to joining us anyway. The greatest signing we made post the 2012 UCL win was Eden Hazard in 2012 – a type of signing we also would have made under this ownership. People tend to view the Abramovich era and it's ambitions as purely how it was from 2003-2012, seemingly ignoring the time from 2012-2022. We might have won trophies in that time but apart from the PL wins in 14/15 and 16/17 – which were both caused by actual ambition – all other success came more from the remnants of the culture he had built 10 years prior rather than actual good and ambitious club management. In conclusion, this idea that Chelsea fans are used to signing all the best players and coaches in the world is just a pure myth based on nothing at all during the last 10 years of the Abramovich era. All credit to Roman, what he turned Chelsea into and all the titles we won under him. But this nostalgia bias needs to stop. Roman stopped showing serious ambition post 2012. Our hit-rate on signings were abysmal. Our scouting was outdated. We had a businesswoman as a sporting director. Highest wage budget in the league excluding Man Utd. "Demanding immediate success" We didn't win any league titles in the last 5 years. Our best finish were 2 3rd place finishes and the closest we were to a title were 19 points off. Excluding the lightning from a clear sky UCL win in 2021, we only made the semifinal once in Roman's last 8 years at the club — which was the win in 2021. We missed out on UCL altogether more times than we made quarter finals in that timeframe! Clearly standards had dropped significantly by the time he was forced to sell the club in 2022.

William wasn’t a WC player but provided balance to the team being opposite of Hazard. Roman era was simply better at this.
