What if "the center cannot hold" is because the center is seen as sanctimonious mid-wits that force artificial binaries for their own moral preening, rather than being the adults in the room.

“Today, like five years ago, a controversial man has been transformed overnight into a one-dimensional saint, marshaled in a culture war that precludes measured thought. Once again, Americans are being asked to genuflect before an idol.”

What's hilarious about this question for the "Ethicist" is that the writer's closed-mindedness is sufficient to tell you which side she's on. nytimes.com/2025/09/17/sty…

As I wrote in a column last fall, there is a quaintness to these analyses, as if it is 1995 and the political fate of the nation depends on what network television producers and newspaper editorial boards decide to say. To a first approximation, no one in Ezra's audience is a Trump voter, and "platforming" Kirk or Shapiro has no effect on political outcomes.
Itai Sher@itaisher

The causal analysis in this article is so weak. As far as I can tell this is the paragraph that most clearly lays it out? Was it the way media portrayed the right that brought us Trump or something more fundamental? I think probably the latter.
