@slsandpet Bless you for being with her at this time. It means more than you may be wholly aware. Bless your mum for her life's work and for the love she has given and received. May you all find peace 💞

Not sure I dig the whole X thing. Forced upgrades feel invasive & I am left unsure if anything is better. Seems we are being forcibly disconnected through stealth. Considering leaving social media altogether.

I’m proud to announce that I start as Head of School of Civil Engineering at @Sydney_Uni today. This is a fantastic school with teaching and research strengths in structural engineering, geomechanics, transportation, humanitarian engineering, wind and environmental engineering.

@stukhan Lots of work being done scoping solutions for flow management along the Baaka, including at weir 19 & 20 (near Louth). Fishways, silting and maintenance of town water supply there in times of low / no flow needs work. NSW weirs have not been maintained & no longer fit for purpose

I'll also work to raise the visibility of the School and grow engagement with industry and government. My view is that an engineering school has essential roles to play in promoting the importance of our discipline towards building a healthy, liveable and sustainable future.

Water buybacks are the cheapest and most efficient way to recovery water, and they're popular in all Basin States! Two in three Australians (66%) support the reintroduction of voluntary water buybacks, with only 10% opposed. @RoseBJackson @ShingvWorld @GlennButcherMP

The federal government should step up efforts to recover water in the Murray-Darling Basin, including expanding voluntary buybacks and doing more to hold state governments to account, the Productivity Commission has said in a major report. - @peterhannam theguardian.com/australia-news…

Proud of #NZ voting for a ceasefire in the conflict in #Gaza. The toll of human life, the injuries, the infrastructure damage is horrendous. The cycle of violence must end. Two-state solution must come back into the frame. Meanwhile hostages must be released & aid must flow.

@GusWhyte Once proposed FPH licences have been handed out in tributaries of the Barwon-Darling, 410GL extra water will be available for extraction each year, as well as 300% carry over, calculated each year (500% in the Gwydir), adding to burden of overextraction, against priority of use.

@JaneMacallister Recovering all the floodplain harvested water would have little or no impact on the delivery of small flows/freshers that are really needed in the lower Darling.

I heard yesterday that in the Menindee town weirpool, that is approx 45km long, there is an estimated fish biomass of 1500t, with 90%+ carp. I reckon this needs a lot more action than just monitoring and data collection.

So why not enable funding in the Water Amendment (Destroying our Communities) Bill 2023 that would ensure the Lower Darling is no longer a death trap for our native fish? Then we could call it (Restoring our Rivers) instead of the current wrecking ball legislation. @JacquiLambie

@GusWhyte Floodplain harvesting increased extraction by 145%. In one year, the amount extracted equalled the total amount recovered for the environment (2100GL). Gaming the rules has added to the limited water which can get to Menindee, over extraction remains root cause. Urgent action pls

@JaneMacallister My understanding is that is more about commence to pump rules than water buybacks. Many mgmt changes needed to turn the river decline around.

@TonyHWindsor Many join food & Fibre groups, thinking they will protect their rights & considerable subsidies, privileges, without realising the largest members mostly aligned or in debt to the foreign entities they depend on for export markets, or further kickbacks. Like politicians are owned

Groundwater systems make significant contributions to surface water flows.Scientific work on just how large that contribution is for individual rivers has not been done.Farmers worried about buybacks in a market they created should be concerned abt CSG acquifer damage.

National Farmers and affiliated state bodies campaigning against @AlboMP Government with surface water buybacks a clear target.Silence tho on the massive risks to groundwater from CSG on Darling Downs and Liverpool Plains. Why?

70GL recovery in the northern basin was disallowed by the Senate in 2018, just b4 a report by MDBA was leaked which, if released, would've altered the outcome. Northern basin toolkit has not recovered any actual water. Buybacks from willing sellers vital to restore healthy rivers
