This proposal is wet cement and open to change on any number of fronts before June. The fact remains that even those of us who felt like the language of the Law Amendment wasn’t the right way to solve the problem, 90% of us (at least) see and agree that there *is* a problem. I’ve said so for as long as the conversation has been around. Even if the correct mechanism for language like this would be a constitutional amendment, the intent here was to address some of the gaping holes from the Law Amendment—chief among them being that it offered nothing in the way of restricting the preaching function. One would think that the best strategy toward solving the issue would be to put our heads together—those who liked the language of Law and those who didn’t—so we can address this in a way that puts it to bed, cementing our complementarian convictions in our documents and allowing us to move on. Anyone who is on board with that, let’s work together. And if my opposition to the Law Amendment means you’re unable or unwilling to make an attempt at friendly cooperation among brothers who actually want to see the same end result, that’s too bad.
Denny Burk@DennyBurk

As I watch Southern Baptists still debating how to deal with female pastors, it strikes me that no major reforms would be necessary if two things could happen: 1. If cooperating churches would stop giving the title and/or functions of pastor to women. 2. If the Credentials Committee would consistently follow our constitution, which stipulates that cooperating churches must closely identify with the BF&M's teaching about qualifications for pastor. We wouldn't be tying ourselves in knots over this if all parties would in good faith commit themselves to the terms of our cooperation as laid out in our Constitution and statement of faith. (By the way, the proposal below should be ruled out of order. You can't use the Bylaws to define the terms of the Constitution. That would effectively be a constitutional change and would need to be proposed as such. That's why the Law Amendment was a proposal to amend the Constitution and not the Bylaws. The only way to make this work would be to make it into another "Law Amendment" kind of proposal.)

Some are suggesting that this would be ruled out of order by the parliamentarian. It very well could be. It is true that in parliamentary procedure a lower document (bylaws) cannot contradict a higher document (constitution). However, this proposal does not rewrite Article III of the Constitution. It doesn’t change the wording about “friendly cooperation.” Instead, it: -Directs how the Credentials Committee evaluates friendly cooperation -Gives interpretive guidance about what “closely identified with the Convention’s adopted statement of faith” means in a specific case This is an attempt to be bylaw-level clarification of how we apply the Constitution, it is not a change to it. Bylaws provide criteria or the process for making decisions already laid out in the Constitution. Could it still be ruled out of order? Sure. The positive is man who opposes the LA have reached out and say they support this. Might be worth a shot.

@DrChrisSanchez Thanks for engaging, Chris. I had the threshold off in the article before correcting it. Either way you slice it, it requires one less vote than the Law Amendment.

@jaredcornutt @drkenalford Cool story. If the majority (50% + 1) compared to 2/3 was no big deal as you say, the ERLC would be dissolved at it deserves.

Jared actually wrote these words: “This proposal would require a two-thirds vote at only one annual meeting, whereas amending the constitution takes two years,” so I don’t see the “MASSIVE factual error.”
William Wolfe 🇺🇸@WilliamWolfe

@jaredcornutt You have a MASSIVE factual error in here. Amending the bylaws requires a 2/3 majority vote, not a "simple majority." This undermines your entire argument. I'm surprised you didn't know this.

Reasons why I like this approach: -only requires one vote. -language regarding function and titles -closes loop holes as we saw with Fielder -works within current framework while giving CC guidelines. A lot of positive feedback on this today.

Important correction here: it is a 2/3 vote, not 50%. But it is still a one year process, as opposed to two. I think the more detailed language is something that would work for most southern baptists—including something the Law Amendment didn’t have in the way of a clarification regarding the preaching function.

It's 8:00 PM on Saturday April 18th. Tomorrow is Sunday, The Lord's Day. If you haven't decided yet, decide now, be in church tomorrow. A bible-believing, gospel-proclaiming church. If you decide now, set the alarm -- you will do it. If you don't know where to go to church shoot me a DM and tell me where you're located. I would love to recommend a church to you if possible.

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

@thatlandinotho Landon, you know absolutely nothing about me and what I value. Your anger is misplaced. Hope you can get offline and enjoy your day. If you want to have a meaningful conversation without impugning my faith let me know.

@jaredcornutt When I’ve watched the past 7 years the SBC being manipulated and chastised for being “Baptist” and meeting in places where statistically 0 Baptist live. Yes it is that serious, I’m sorry you have such little value in your faith and practice.

@jaredcornutt You say no one’s offered yet you have researched Anaheim well, why not research churches there aswell? You easily can apply and move. But the issue is you don’t want to live in Anaheim because it goes against your core values. Why are you mocking the same core values you hold?

@jaredcornutt Really? What world are you living in? Tell that to all the Biovocational Pastors, that have a an extremely poor congregation with less than 100. The aforementioned is the heart of the SBC and they have no voice! Great job on leading Alabama in COOP giving.
