Thank you to the 122 House members that voted to prioritize Mississippi teachers, state employees, and taxpayers. House Education Chairman @robroberson43 and Reps. @KentMcCarty, @JansenOwen, and @Repkwfelsher have worked tirelessly and are to be commended. The House will not rest on the time we have been afforded here. We are going to focus on doing big things that positively impact Mississippians. To our teachers, you deserve no less and you deserve the truth. If you are an educator, or passionate about our education system, a first responder, or concerned about PERS Tier 5, read Senate Bill 2103 as amended by the House and decide for yourself if want your State Senate to deliberate, or continue with inaction. This is not about ownership or legislation being finalized in a House Bill versus a Senate bill; as the only vehicle alive now is a Senate Bill amended by the House. This is about pursuing the best policy on the table for Mississippians. In the House, Mississippians will remain the focus, not political plays.

Today, the House stood firm to revive a teacher pay raise that our hardworking educators deserve. With a unanimous House vote this morning, Senate Bill 2103 was amended to include the House’s original teacher pay proposal of $5,000. Now let me be abundantly clear as there has been a lot of misinformation about the other components that were in House Bill 1126, our original teacher pay bill. Yes, there are additional measures in this bill and those measures include exactly this:

The Capitol has been full of young visitors this week! I enjoyed getting to know the students of Tupelo High School’s Broadcast Journalism Class, Attala County FFA, and Madison-Ridgeland Academy’s AP Government Class. Their insightful questions and interest in learning about what happens at their State Capitol are a reminder of the importance of engaging our next generation of leaders.

The Mississippi Federation of Republican Women is an absolute force, and their support and voice on issues lead to commonsense, conservative legislation. Today, I was proud to speak to them and remind them their Republican House is doing Republican things! ✅ Open to Religion Act ✅ The SHIELD Act ✅ Ban on the shipment of abortion inducing drugs ✅ Require local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE ✅ Mississippi Fair Banking Act ✅ Foster Youth Earned Benefits Protection for Success Act ✅ Mississippi Keeping Kids Safe Online Act ✅ AND education reforms that reflect the Republican Party’s core values of freedom, opportunity, and accountability

Today, the House passed all House-originating state budget bills. The subcommittee structure of the Appropriations process in the House provides full transparency and budget vetting, allowing members to know exactly what they are voting for. Despite what some media outlets continue to report, all 51 budget bills were double-referred and managed to make their way through the legislative process just fine, and now head to the Senate for consideration. I applaud our Appropriations Chairmen for their thorough evaluation of our state’s budget. We will repeat this process when we receive the remaining half of the budget bills originating in the Senate. Included in today’s budget bills was the K-12 education budget, which includes the Mississippi Student Funding Formula. For the third year in a row, since the creation of the new funding formula, public education has been fully funded. In just three years, the Mississippi Student Funding Formula has now been fully funded more times than the MAEP formula was funded in its 20+ year history. This is the direct result of prioritizing students over systems. As education remains a top priority in the House, Senate Bill 2294 was amended to include the Mississippi Math Act, Literacy Program Expansion, and Financial Literacy — three components from HB 2 that directly build on our education success. The Mississippi Math Act establishes a statewide framework for mathematics instruction, implements screening and intervention tools to improve student math proficiency, and aligns student math skills with college- and career-readiness standards. The Literacy Program Expansion builds on the success of the Literacy Based Promotion Act (3rd-grade reading gate), commonly known as the Mississippi Miracle, by creating a similar program for 4th through 8th grade to maintain and expand students' reading skills. Lastly, the bill requires that Financial Literacy be added to the curriculum as an option for public school students in grades 6 – 8. For 9th–12th grade, a single half-credit in Financial Literacy must be completed before graduation. When it comes to education or our state budget, the House will not accept the current way of doing things just because that’s the way it has always been done. We all know, when nothing changes, nothing changes. We will continue to seek opportunities that build on our education gains, prioritizing the potential of the next generation of Mississippians.

Great turnout and an engaged membership at The Rotary Club of Jackson. I enjoyed visiting with these Rotarians to give an update on ice storm relief and the Legislative Session, providing insight into three significant bills that passed the House last week: Teacher Pay Raise and PERS Tier 5 Corrections, Mobile Sports Betting and PERS Funding, and PBM Reform; as well as what is next for education reform in Mississippi.

Three key pieces of legislation have passed the House floor and are heading to the Senate for consideration: Teacher Pay Raise and PERS Tier 5 Corrections, Mobile Sports Betting and PERS Funding, and PBM Reform. The House will continue to listen to constituents and pursue purposeful legislation that prioritizes Mississippians. We have two months left in this Legislation Session, and much more to accomplish.

Today, the Senate chose to be premature of legislative deadlines and performative in their 2-minute Education Committee meeting to kill HB 2. The self-proclaimed deliberative body did not deliberate. Instead of engaging in meaningful work to build on Mississippi’s education gains, the Senate has chosen the route to shut down any productive pathway to put students before systems. To avoid conversation, debate, or thorough evaluation is a disservice to parents, students, and future generations of Mississippians. Senate leadership has aligned themselves with the ACLU, Southern Poverty Law Center, the Mississippi Democratic Party, and the status quo. I am incredibly proud of my House members who were brave and courageous in their vote for HB 2, unlike the impulsive and rash action shown today by the Senate. Given the way major legislation has been championed by the House over the previous two years, we have seen this move from the “deliberative body” and know the playbook. We are not deterred. This issue will not go away. The Senate has anchored their support to the status quo. We are comfortable where we stand in our support from @WhiteHouse, Governor @tatereeves, most of our statewide elected officials, faith-based organizations, business leaders, the Mississippi Federation of Republican Women, and the majority of Mississippians. The House has proven we will stand up for what is best for Mississippi, and especially our state’s greatest asset – our children.

The recent winter storm has had a sweeping impact across our state, with North to Central Mississippi taking the greatest hit. Many are without power, and numerous roads are blocked, but crews are working diligently. Thank you to these crews that have been working tirelessly. Also, please pray for the two lives we learned to have lost as of the Governor’s most recent update. Mississippi is no stranger to severe weather, and every time we have been impacted, we have proven to come together and build our communities back stronger than before. Please pray for Mississippi.

The 6th-grade class from Presbyterian Day School toured the House chamber during their field trip today. These curious young minds from my neck of the woods in Kosciusko were excited to spend their day learning more about their State Capitol. They especially enjoyed practicing with the gavel to call the House to order!

HB 2 has passed in the Mississippi House of Representatives! I am incredibly proud of the House members who stood up for kids and families in Mississippi. With more than four hours of debate, I commend both sides of the aisle for civil discussion. The Mississippi Education Freedom Act is about what is best for children and future generations. HB 2 has gained the support of The @WhiteHouse, our Governor @tatereeves, most of our statewide elected officials, faith-based organizations, business leaders, and the Mississippi Federation of Republican Women. With this growing support, my hope is that the State Senate will engage with the House as we work to bring Education Freedom to Mississippi families.

HB 2 has taken its first major step in the legislative process by passing out of the House Education Committee! I am proud of our committee members who voted in favor of giving Mississippi families real education options. The Mississippi Education Freedom Act will next head to the House floor where we will debate prioritizing a child’s education needs. Mississippi is one step closer to joining 17 other states that promote parent power and bolster future generations.

Thank you, @tatereeves, for keeping your foot on the gas! The Governor could simply be taking a victory lap, enjoying all the recent success in our state that he has helped foster and create. But he’s not resting, he too believes in Education Freedom and is supporting our legislative efforts. The Governor’s support, combined with @POTUS’s, emboldens my House members’ resolve to see true Education Freedom across the policy finish line. While the opposition concerns themselves with preserving institutions and the status quo, the House is going to preserve the rights of parents and the best interests of families. We are incredibly grateful to have the Governor's support. @WhiteHouse @MSGOP

The @WhiteHouse is watching Mississippi and Education Freedom is gaining momentum! HB 2 promotes the Make America Great Again Platform and @POTUS's Executive Order to return power over education to families, instead of bureaucracies. Mississippi is completely surrounded by states that have adopted the Republican policy of Education Freedom. Parents know what is best for their children. Mississippi is overdue to pass school choice and prioritize parent power! magnoliatribune.com/2026/01/12/tru…
