At the @SANParks Savanna Science Network Meeting, I shared why this is also a communications issue: Local actors need skills to monitor and position themselves within dominant narratives, and balance gaps with well-considered content.

The proximity paradox also means that affluent actors external to PAs can and do exert disproportionate control on national, regional and global narratives and decisions around local #conservation and #wildlife issues.

In my work w/ @WWFSouthAfrica Khetha, I found that #ProtectedAreas like #GreaterKruger face a proximity paradox: external actors experience mostly positive effects from protected areas, while local actors are far more likely to experience mostly negative effects. #HWC
