@itsneenzjeez Yes. My understanding is that Waymo and several other firms have achieved level 4 autonomy and there is starting to be a substantial record that these AI drivers (but only those really functioning at that high level of safety) are now safer than the average human driver.

This is personally exciting for me, as this new expanded area includes my house on the north side & our band practice space on the south side, with my office in the middle. With the notable gap of North Lamar north of 183, this now covers most dense activity in Austin's core.

@JoeCutrufo Fun detail for Houston that I think is important: The area the same size as the loop to the west of the loop also is home to about 600,000 people. The dense urban core is really those two chunks, home to 1.2 million people (often depicted as an arrow).

There are more people living inside the 610 loop than live in Baltimore, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Miami, Minneapolis, Tampa, Cleveland, New Orleans, or Pittsburgh.

You could fit the entire population of Atlanta inside Houston's 610 loop and still have room for everyone who lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Austin has a once-in-a-generation chance to reconnect our communities. That’s why I joined my colleagues in urging the Council to move forward with Our Future I-35 Cap & Stitch project. This is about more than infrastructure — it’s about building a more connected, livable ATX.

It’s easy to claim we must sacrifice one priority for another. But real leadership finds ways to build equity, connection, and progress — simultaneously. The I-35 caps bring in resources without pulling from housing or climate. We cannot shy from this opportunity.
