The Petrodollar story is pleb slop. Pricing oil in dollars has an infinitesimal effect on the value of the dollar. Have we not learned anything from the Epstein interview? The dollar is a complex system nested within multiple complex systems. Oil revenues do get recycled into treasuries and that has effects but it barely matters at the margin because energy revenues make up only a small percentage of total inflows into treasuries. There are trillions in goods and services and financial flows transacted in dollars with treasuries used as collateral global markets and in central bank settlements. Treasuries sit at the core of the dollar system. They have value because American entities are forced to pay taxes and because the system is (like it or not) still trusted. Liquidity gained from the dollar’s role as the reserve currency begets more liquidity until confidence breaks through default or hyperinflation caused by politics. The petrodollar narrative also ignores the dollar-eurodollar system. It also ignores the role of international law and the geopolitical order enforced by the US and its allies for better or worse. If holders begin to feel that property rights are no longer respected or that US power is applied arbitrarily they will reallocate into other assets (like what China is doing).
