The @nytimes today featured work from @strongtowns, along with @JeffSpeckFAICP and some of my other friends. If your city (or school district) finds itself awash in asphalt, know that (a) you're not alone, and (b) there is a better approach.

@Kaid_in_DC @td_dion T3 has similar densities to suburban sprawl but some important differences: interconnected street network, buildings that shape the street, some mix of uses, and the T3 portion is limited in size.
English

@td_dion T3 is basically suburban sprawl & should not be legitimized by otherwise enlightened planners & architects. T2 can also become sprawl without protective measures in place.

10-14% of morning rush hour trips are kids being driven to school, nationally. Many suburban and/or small to mid-sized communities could transform their road capacity - and their carbon footprint - by focusing on safe + active transportation routes, such as greenways.

Form based codes don’t cause gentrification after all. At least in the two extensive studies being shared at #CNU30 today. In one study, FBCs experienced ~1/2 the increase in rents than use-based codes. ~@MVGoldsmith

Here’s an example where reducing car access can improve emergency vehicle access.

An ambulance uses the new bus lane to bypass slow moving traffic on Mass Ave in North Cambridge. Prior to improvements, this section was often packed so tight with motor traffic congestion that it was difficult or impossible to make way for emergency vehicles. #CambMA #VisionZero
