"...too often our institutions celebrate student activists AFTER they have graduated". Professor Benjamin providing encouragement to the brave students who didn't let attending a revered institution stifle their truth. #StopCopCity #FreePalestine

1 year ago, Ralph Yarl was shot in the head after he rang the wrong doorbell in Kansas City, Missouri. Although this young man was involved in a severely traumatic experience, he won't let it define him — he plans to study engineering at a university next fall. 🙏🏿

BREAKING: We’re representing @BreadfortheCity in a federal lawsuit challenging the District’s practice of sending police to mental health emergencies instead of mental health professionals.

The Strengthening Families Coalition is deeply worried that the current budget draft will destabilize DC's already-struggling behav health provider network. Kids will suffer as a result. @ChmnMendelson - urgent action is needed to address the youth mental health crisis. #TeamSBBH

The FY24 budget draft before @councilofdc today will destabilize DC's already-struggling behavioral health provider network. In a mental health crisis + workforce shortage, DC cannot afford to keep asking providers to do more with less in public programs. @ChmnMendelson #TeamSBBH

@BlackSwanAcad is youth-led and directed. Anyone who has volunteered and/or partnered with the organization can tell you that. And it is offensive, especially coming from a member of the D.C. State Board of Education.
Eric Goulet@EJGoulet

No offense to any of the young people testifying on behalf of the @BlackSwanAcad, but the adult leadership of this organization has already made it clear that "Police-Free School DC" is THE top issue in its advocacy platform. (1/4) blackswanacademy.org/policefree-sch…

Did we really learn absolutely nothing from the '90s & early 2000s? Charging kids as adults does not lead to safer communities, it does the complete opposite. Thank you @DCAttorneyGen for pushing back about this. #TreatKidsLikeKids #CareNotCages
FOX 5 DC@fox5dc

Data shows violent crimes involving young suspects are on the rise in the District. FOX 5 asked the AG why kids and teens aren’t facing serious consequences for their violent actions. fox5dc.com/news/dc-ag-on-…

Remember a month ago when the DC Police Union & & anon Twitter profiles tried to convince people that the GOP Congress was blocking legislation passed by the DC Council because they cared about public safety? Here is example like 1000 that shows they clearly do not.
Sam Plo Kwia Collins, Jr.@SamPKCollins

FYI: @RepAndyBiggsAZ released a portion of a GOP federal budget proposal that includes cuts to funding for District-based public safety agencies, particularly CSOSA and the Public Defender Service. This comes weeks after a congressional hearing about public safety in D.C.

Violent crime in DC in 2022 was the lowest its been in at least 30 years. Violent crime in DC is down nearly 20% yoy so far. Congress moving to override the will of the people of DC is not about violent crime or crime policy. It's about power & control.

There are no circumstances that can convince me a 13 year old child deserved to be murdered in the street for alleged property crime. It’s unbelievable to me that some think this is justified.

When I was 13, I got into a lot of trouble. Made a lot of bad choices. And lived to learn from them. A lot of us did. Karon was shot dead. His family lost a child, and his friends are hurt permanently. This can’t be who we are as a city.
Lindsay Watts@LindsayAWatts

Karon Blake, 13, was shot & killed by a NE man who tells police he saw him breaking into cars early Sat. Tonight Karon’s school shared photos of him, describing him as a quiet & inquisitive 6th grader who loved football & fashion. Police have not yet id’d or charged shooter. 1/2

If MPD cared about the integrity of the investigation, why did they publicize that 1) the killer was a “homeowner,” 2) the killer had a registered gun, 3) the killer’s version of events; and 4) the killer’s claims that Karon was tampering w cars?
DCist@DCist

In an animated press conference on Tuesday, D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee offered few new details regarding the man who fatally shot 13-year-old Karon Blake, and instead condemned alleged "misinformation" spreading about the case. bit.ly/3CABP4k
