@drgoatofficial @moochdad @StefanFSchubert Yes, that is also an important aspect. Market rents could push out people with low incomes from the central areas. A lot of flats in Stockholm are owned by public housing companies. So I guess the public also gets richer in that case

@JensFust @moochdad @StefanFSchubert How so? It would just mean that only rich people got to stay in those areas (like it is now, according to you), but the landlords got richer.

How market rents would change rents in Stockholm. Rent would double in desirable parts of the city centre, but wouldn’t change at all in less desirable suburbs. Rent control is a very ineffective way to reduce inequality.

@moochdad @StefanFSchubert An important context is that the central areas, that have the highest increases in rent according to the map, are inhabited by people with higher incomes on average. So this should mean that market rents could decrease inequality, even if a majority of people increase their rent

@StefanFSchubert So all rent prices go up according to your image. Tell me, how does that reduce inequality?

@StefanFSchubert @expertretar Dysfunctional housing market is maybe a better term. I agree that market rents is the way to go. But there is probably other policy changes that could increase housing development in Stockholm.

@JensFust @expertretar I don’t there is a housing shortage. They’ve built a lot of new housing in Stockholm in recent years. The reason for these queues is that the rents are massively below what you have to pay on the open market. New rentals fetch higher rents giving developers incentives to build.

Mean queuing time for a rental flat in Stockholm, years. Central Stockholm: 21.1 years. Rents are regulated and are often far below half of the market rent in central Stockholm. (The red numbers are for newly-built flats, which typically have a higher rent.)

@expertretar @StefanFSchubert Yes, I agree that every system has tradeoffs. But I think we should prioritize a system that makes it more profitable to build flats and thereby decrease housing shortage. I think that the current system is neither good nor fair

@VilgotHuhn @Allodoxaa @JensFust @motivatedjoy So my prior is that if he were competent, he would've chosen the models that the LRT actually prefers, and show that his result stands. It took me ~10 minutes to do this. Including googling the syntax of R

So I found this effect size extremely implausible, which is why I looked at the paper and noticed that one of the estimates that went into the meta-analysis was a d=50.54 (!) Notably the control group had an SD=0.34 on the WAIS so this was clearly a SD-SE mix-up.
Crémieux@cremieuxrecueil

New meta-analysis of IQ and violence found that, compared to nonviolent controls, violent persons averaged about 28-point lower IQs. That's a pretty sizable gap!

@VilgotHuhn Yes, I have rated risk of bias of hundreds of systematic reviews and the majority are really bad. Cochrane reviews are usually very high quality

@JensFust That’s a shockingly high rate! Interesting! I feel like I’ve soured on meta-analyses broadly, because of how often the mix of studies implies an unclear estimand. They have their role but imo that role is more niche than is usually assumed.

@JensFust Regarding methodology, meta-science seems to be a topic he cares a lot about. I remember he was very optimistic during the RFK jr hearing since they pay some lip-service to it. Personally, I would have had some worries about appointing an anti-vax activist as HHS secretary.

@VilgotHuhn I wonder if Mr C read and chose to disregard your comments. Can’t be good for your sleep to be pro-MAGA and pro-science in current day USA.
