This Hive is getting worse. @HiveHelper the heating is running even though schedule says it should be off. Resetting schedule, copying from other days, offing then onning none of them resolve it. All I can do is complete turn it off. Advance to next doesn't work either.

Is @HiveHomeUK actually any good?? Was a massive faff to set up, especially adding a hub after the thermostat was already connected to receiver. Then it just decided to disconnect last night and needed factory reset...

Was hoping a wireless system would avoid the pain we have with @UponorUK UFH controls which do a factory reset every time there's a power cut. Why?! But feeling pessimistic now.

@mak2kofi Certainly looks like an emerald but the one you picked in iNat (or iNat suggested) seems to be an Asian species not W Africa. Impressive Similarity if it isn't the same species.

@NeilShenvi Sounds like John Stott "we cannot evade our political responsibility to share in changing the structures which inhibit development. The community of the cross which has truly absorbed the message of the cross will always be motivated to action by the demands of justice and love."

Christians cannot pretend they can transcend politics and simply “preach the Gospel." Christians should be involved politically as a way of loving our neighbors. Who said it?

Can anyone help me find a slightly obscure reference from Revue de zoologie et de botanique africaines: de Roo-de Ridder, A. & de Roo-de Ridder, F. 1969. The first records of Cinnyris “ogilvie-granti” (Bannerman) from the Congo Republic. Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr. 80: 391–396.

Evergestis pallidata was new for my fen edge garden last night following on from E. limbata last weekend, and Clavigesta purdeyi just my second. A giant Rosy Minor threw me off for a bit.

Amongst a huge catch of Yponomeuta spp on Friday I also had 7 Ancylosis oblitella (6 shown) which seem rare in VC29, and an Uncinus obductalla (I think), which seems rarer still. Also 2 Gypsy Moths and a Jersey Tiger.

Here are a couple more that I'm not so sure about: possibly a Coleophora with some impressive spurs and an Agonopterix larva in pink?

@Geordieanarchy @ClimateDad77 Good question. The "similar flora and fauna" clearly can cope. But many other species can't and you won't have seen those in both places. If species adapt by moving they run out of places to move to (e.g. mountain tops). The rate of change is faster than rate that they can adapt.

@ClimateDad77 Genuine question- why can’t the environment adapt? The uk for example has approx 5c variation between the NE England and Essex (my father in law would collect data daily and lived in both areas). The flora and fauna grown in these regions is similar.

2024 was the hottest year on this planet in over 125 THOUSAND YEARS. 2025 is on track to be the second hottest. 1976. WAS. NOT. HOTTER.

I think this might be Caloptilia cuculipennella which seems scarce in Cambridgeshire. Any thoughts @FlyinginFordham ?

389 of 118 moths in my Cambs garden last night included no less than 4 new macros. Obscure Wainscot, Blackneck, Marbled White Spot, and Shaded Pug. A fifth nfg in the form of Eidophasia messingiella brought the garden list to 601. Amazing.

@ChrisHowles Nigeria does a fair job of retaliation with their visa process in the UK. It definitely functions as a barrier to travel.

"This system needs to be called out and changed. And it’s time African governments started protecting their citizens from this daylight exploitation.^ It was the same in Uganda. The US embassy was the worst culprit but only just. Anger is growing.
Lynn Ngugi@lynn_ngugi1

The UK Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) in Westlands, Nairobi, is a masterclass in modern day exploitation. Kenyans pay hundreds of dollars, wait in the sun, get misinformed, and walk away feeling less human. The new venue at Principal Place (yes, they left 9West) has no proper waiting area and no parking. This is by design to have you pay 17K for their VIP/Premium “services “ If you’re not paying for premium services, you’re left outside in the heat, on the pavement. Elderly people, parents with kids, students, all treated like a security threat Their Communication is Trash. You get vague emails like “your passport is ready for collection ” only to be turned away and told “collection is from 2pm to 5pm, (you can easily indicate that on the same damn email) That means if you show up at 10am, you’ll have to wait till 2pm or you can easily pay the 17K to be attended to quickly.. ?? EXPLOITATION No clear timeline. No courtesy. You’re meant to guess your way through it. These centers aren’t run by embassies, they’re outsourced to private companies who monetize your desperation. It’s a business, not a service. And guess what? No refund if your visa is denied(familiar?) The worst part? This is normalized. We’ve accepted that applying for a visa means surrendering your dignity just to maybe be allowed into a country that benefits from our labor, money, and talent. If Global North countries want to charge Africans these high fees and accord them zero dignity , the bare minimum should be basic human respect. Decent waiting areas. Transparent timelines and Fair communication. This isn’t about security. It’s about power and exploitation… This system needs to be called out and changed. And it’s time African governments started protecting their citizens from this daylight exploitation.
