Last week, Trump's USDA announced plans to significantly increase slaughter line speeds at pork and poultry plants. The meat industry celebrated the news. It was hardly covered, but has enormous implications for hundreds of thousands of workers.

Research on welfare during slaughter and euthanasia is emotionally a very difficult area to work in, but still, unfortunately, very necessary.

@Lewis_Bollard And yesterday, USDA terminated probationary employees. The only USDA-ARS unit working exclusively on farm animal welfare (LBRU) is now 1 scientist strong instead of 5. Not sustainable. It will be cut.

Two weeks ago Brooke Rollins sparked outrage by pledging to help wipe out state anti-cruelty laws.
This week the Senate Ag Committee *unanimously* approved her. Today the Senate will likely confirm her.

Today Trump's USDA nominee, Brooke Rollins, told Congress that she will force states to allow the sale of pork from crated pigs. States banned these sales to stop animal cruelty. The conservative Supreme Court upheld those bans. Only pork industry lobbyists want this change.

This is a brazen ploy by the pork industry and its paid-for politicians.
They plan to overturn popular state bans on cruel gestation crates for pigs through the byzantine Farm Bill.
They’re really hoping you won’t notice this.

He is correct... and one of the most egregious examples of crony capitalism is the corrupt alliance between the Chinese-owned Smithfield Foods and senators like @SenJoniErnst , who are trying to push through a backhanded deal to FORCE gestation-crated pork back onto states which have already voted to ban it. Pay attention to the "Farm Bill" they're trying to sneak in through Brooke Rollins - it's a complete f-you to Republican values of states' rights of self determination, it hurts small farmers, and it is terrible for American health.
