Just had the worst shift of my life and I need to vent. I’m 28, Asian, working at a restaurant part timeto pay off student loans. Tonight a boomer dude (late 60s) sits at my table and immediately starts complaining about the menu and table. He snaps his fingers at me like I’m a dog. Orders chicken curry, then sends it back because it was too spicy???. While I’m standing there politely apologizing, he goes off: “In my day girls like you actually knew how to do the job. What are you, Chinese? You all look the same anyway.” honestly, couldn't believe someone would say that in 2026. I was born in London. I have a communications degree. But none of that matters. I’m just the young Asian waitress who exists to be disrespected. His wife looked mortified and mouthed “sorry.” He left a $2.72 tip on a $67.18 bill. I cried in the bathroom for two minutes, fixed my makeup, and went back to the floor because rent is due and this is what survival looks like. To every service worker out there smiling through the disrespect: I see you. We’re not invisible, we’re human. fuck boomers.

@MetamateDaz What a repulsive man. I'm a boomer and I tip 50%, talk to wait staff, ask them how their day's going and am genuinely sympathetic if they tell me they're having a tough one. I love anyone who does anything for me, whether I'm paying or not.

Any word with tard added to it should be classified as HATE speech in Canada. I am autistic and have AD/HD it is a very cruel term and Conservatives love to use it against people. It is awful to use that word and it hurts people like me. The CONS seem to enjoy causing pain.

@BartFurley I think people use it more to mean willfully ignorant, insular, brainwashed, nowadays. It doesn't seem to me the use of the word has much to do with being neuro-divergent or cognitively compromised.

It is an interface problem. The world is still there, and we are still there, locked away in our brain. The connection between the two fails. We slowly go blind, deaf. The biological equipment that lets us experience reality breaks down. And to be quite honest, we get tired. We know we don’t have a lot of years left and we wonder: is it worth the effort of learning some new thing?

I will be 80 in a week. Perhaps if I make it to 90 I will agree with you, but I suspect not, barring Alzheimer’s, or some other major deterioration of my mind. I can see no reason that the elderly should be any more technologically ignorant than people at any other age in our society. It is a matter of choice; people choose to learn to use the newest most effective tools or they do not. The elderly actually have great advantages over everyone else in that they not only are perfectly capable of learning all the new tools. They also have a great depth of knowledge of old tools that younger people will probably never learn about, and that knowledge can be quite handy at times. Thinking that the elderly are disenfranchised by modern technology is in my opinion, a serious misjudgment.
