Also, thanks @stevesaylor for hitting on the importance of academic research being shared beyond paywalls, especially for a11y work that's so relevant outside academia! for those interested, my finalist paper "Playing on Hard Mode" is open access on the ACM DL! (link in reply)

Anyone in Seattle like hard cider and board games? Thinking of putting together a monthly game group. (The hard cider is optional.)

@willie_agnew All of Northalsted has fantastic drag (Chicago has the best local drag & I WILL fight people about it), but the best shows I’ve seen are consistently at @Roscoestavern, Friday night RPDR viewing parties w guests who always turn it outtttt

@carolmertz also the trend of games that have companion apps-- ONU Werewolf, Search for Planet X, et al-- has *potential* for meaningful a11y design (eg, being able to privately query board info with a screen reader + headphones), though I can't say I've seen particular success w that yet

@carolmertz so I don't know how intentional its a11y design was, but Paranormal Detectives is something my friends & I have found to be delightfully accessible because it's a game "about" multimodal communication, there are a lot of opportunities for nonvisual play embedded into its design

@plopesresearch @ken0324 Oh this is awesome, gotta say I’m jealous!! This project really got me excited about the potential for research to be more than just papers, back in my early HCI-curious days! 😄 Glad to see the parasite coming back to life a bit 🪱

It was dusty in the basement for years, which might explain why it broke after 1h of working haha. Was still amazing that my new colleague @ken0324 could try it! 3/5

Before #CHI2023 I had a really beautiful day at @HPI_DE hanging out with my former advisor Patrick and his amazing new students, who were so kind as to take our old artwork from the basement and set it up! Some fun stories below in this thread. 1/5

Also, if you haven’t read Frank’s micropaper on micropapers, I highly recommend it— sometimes in research, the idea just needs to be *out there* so the community can build on it! arxiv.org/abs/2302.12854

Great micropaper from @FrankElavsky on the pro & cons of “options” as accessibility solutions— def a good lens for looking at #CHI2023 a11y work Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for a good option— but sometimes, navigating a small novel of a11y options is a barrier in&of itself!
