I just came across this photo of my Iranian driver/bodyguard/friend Mahmoudi, who has died in Tehran. He was one of the myriad reasons why I love Iran so much and hope for its release from a particularly irksome form of state capture. I just wish Mahmoudi had seen it come about.

Brilliant new substack by my colleagues @zivreichert & @JessicaCecil on the future of media in the world of AI - and what it means for society. Well worth signing up 👇
Ziv Reichert@zivreichert

Launching a new Substack called Transcribed w/ @JessicaCecil. Jess is a friend and a seasoned media exec who spent years at the BBC, where she was Chief of Staff to four Directors General and helped lead the organisation through major shifts in how audiences engage with technology. She built global partnerships in response, including Make It Digital, which led to the BBC micro:bit, now used by 60 million children in more than 60 countries to learn coding. She went on to found the Trusted News Initiative, a coalition of major tech platforms and global news organisations including the BBC, Reuters, Meta and Google, created to counter the most harmful forms of disinformation in real time. Before that, she was a senior producer on Newsnight, an Emmy-nominated documentary maker, and began her career producing reports on everything from the fall of the Berlin Wall to conflicts across the Middle East. Over the past few years, Jess and I have had ongoing conversations about where media is heading as technology, especially AI, continues to evolve rapidly. Those conversations now form the basis of Transcribed, an experimental publication exploring how media is changing, the forces driving that change, and what it means for society. Our first piece explores system prompts, the invisible editorial layer that shapes the worldview of language models: transcribedmedia.substack.com/p/he-who-contr…

On 14th October, we hosted the fourth edition of the #LondonFIMIforum - Countering Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI). Elections, lessons from Ukraine, the effects of #FIMI in Africa as well as the security and defence angle were the leading themes.

@rasmus_kleis Thanks yes - starkly highlights: good journalism matters to democracy but good journalism isn’t going to be a happy accident of current markets

Very best analysis of news industry & sobering findings. More people avoiding news & when they do consume it are increasingly rejecting news organisations’ own site/apps, taking news from platform feeds instead. Quality journalism costs so how to pay for it? #DNR24 @rasmus_kleis

This is very, very sad. Solidarity with @stanfordio and very alarmed that top institutions conducting cutting-edge research on internet repression and algorithmic authoritarianism are being suppressed in the US. platformer.news/stanford-inter…

Terrible to learn of the death of the wonderful Michael Mosley. I was lucky enough to work with him for several years at the BBC: the effervescent curiosity, creativity and intense kindness was always there. My thoughts are with Clare and their children. RIP my friend.

Great to see @rasmus_kleis and the @risj_oxford new initiative on AI and the news industry - with a shared understanding of the opportunities, the news industry can best navigate what is going to be a massive upheaval

Nearly missed this, but @JessicaCecil has produced a great summary of three roundtables with publishers, platforms & policy folks on (gen) AI and news held at @risj_oxford worth a read & the thread pulls out some of the key highlights (full disclosure: I was rapporteur for this)

An essential discussion during #nightofideas at @ifru_london about combating disinformation. Fake news & manipulations of ideas often shape the geopolitical landscape and impact public opinion, so it’s a common challenge we have to tackle. @JessicaCecil @acsector @carljackmiller

There was a very high willingness among participating news publishers to experiment with new GenAI tools, @JessicaCecil found in @risj_oxford workshops, at the same time, many news organisations are concerned that their interests do not align with those of tech platforms. More ⬇️
