Born 3rd May 1955 the tragic figure of David Hookes. A fine left handed bat his career disappointed in the end: 1,306 runs at 34.36 in only 23 Tests. His 1st class average hints at his brilliance: 12,671 runs at 43.99 with 32 tons. He died aged only 48 after a pub altercation.

Today is the good old 24th of April again. As some of you may recall, Sachin Tendulkar and I share the same birthday. It seems to happen every single year. Between us, we’ve won the World Cup, scored 34,357 international runs and taken 201 international wickets. We’ve even managed to take more 5 wicket hauls in ODIs than Warnie. So happy birthday to us @sachin_rt — and thank you for your contribution to our wonderful and very longstanding partnership 😉 And, as an aside, thank you also to so many of you who have kept me company here and in the real world over the last year. It’s been a lot of fun. Your friendship is very much valued. Hopefully, I’ve kept you entertained. Thank you in particular to my extended family at @SWCCcrocus and @surreycricket and also to my newfound friends at @rajasthanroyals — cricket and our community make such a positive difference to my life. It’s a joy. So thank you all.

@SkyCricket Would it be an incentive and huge reward if the County Championship winners the following season got to play the Test team in a 4 day first class match? At Lords, on Sky, bigger money… Season opener!

@WG_RumblePants Was another class player of my younger days as leaning the art of the game we love. I shall however remember the 1976 series, and the wonderful moment after playing and missing, the picture says it all, with thanks to the owner of the photo

John Edrich seems to be another star of English cricket whose legacy isn’t as valued as it should be. Despite looking 55 for most of his career, he was amongst the best players of his generation, playing 77 Tests, averaging 43.54 and scoring a triple century against NZ in 1965. Lillee reckoned Edrich one of the hardest men to remove in world cricket.

@models_by_Russ Wish I could disagree, again we were just awful, however as you say Scotland wanted it more, I do not want to take anything away from them, they were excellent today.

I know it’s not over yet but fuck it 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 That wasn’t rugby, that was a ceremonial surrender by England national rugby union team. Honestly, if we’d turned up waving a white flag and a box of shortbread it would’ve saved everyone 80 minutes. And surprise, surprise — the Calcutta Cup is staying in Scotland. Again. At this point it’s not a rivalry, it’s a scheduled annual donation. I’m convinced England intentionally throw this game as part of a long-running apology tour. “Sorry about the past, Scotland. Have the Calcutta Cup. Have free university tuition. Have free prescriptions. Have free parking. And while you’re at it, enjoy watching England forget how to tackle, pass, or think under pressure.” All clearly bundled into some 600-year-old settlement for, yes, executing William Wallace. Our bad. Have another win. England today looked like a team that:    •   Didn’t fancy contact    •   Panicked when challenged    •   And treated Murrayfield like a heritage site you’re not allowed to disturb No fire. No edge. No nastiness. Just polite, apologetic rugby — the worst kind. Scotland wanted it. England expected it. And expectation, lads, is not a game plan. See you next year for the same hype, the same talk, and the same inevitable outcome — England playing like it’s their turn to let Scotland feel good about themselves.

@JamesLucasIT I remember staying here or close by in 1983, euro rail tour for a couple of months. The water was so cold we used to use it as a fridge, put butter and drinks, including milk in bags and tie to rocks or logs. It was a hot summer but nature provided perfect natural storage.

@PoppingCreaseSA Always the Ashes, shame it no longer happens but love it when they meet in ODI, India v Pakistan. So number two is Aus v India when in Australia. Home series for SA against Aus, India and England I always enjoy.
