In a few days we are coming up to the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong. One of the greatest Australian military victories ever. 700 Australian men of the 3 RAR - fighting alongside US Sherman tanks - held off around 10,000 Chinese Communist forces on Hill 504 in hand to hand combat. Australians lost 32 killed, 59 wounded, 3 captured. The Chinese Communist forces lost at least 2,000 men killed and wounded. Australian 3 RAR was awarded the US Presidential Unit Citation - one of very few Australian units ever to receive it. Canadians absorbed the main Chinese effort on the second night at Hill 677. Their 2 PPCLI also received the US Presidential Unit Citation. Kiwis provided critical artillery support with the New Zealand 16th Field Regiment. Total Australian-Commonwealth-US force in the engagement was around 2,800. They held off at least 10,000 Chinese Communist forces and won. Each year in Australia on 24 April we pause to honour the men of Kapyong and all veterans of Korea
