The challenge with Nolan for The Odyssey wasn’t solved by “Troy” back in the mid-2000s. The problem is much deeper, and The Green Knight (2021) showed us why. The modern mind just doesn’t comprehend the true nature of “myth.” If you divide “material” and “spiritual,” you’ll miss it. If you try to make the story fit modern notions of “history” bound by scientism, you’ll miss it. If you ask “what’s ‘real’ here and what’s symbolic?” you’ll miss it. The Green Knight actually does a good job of making you feel how disorienting real myths are to the modern mind. But it’s hard to portray myth and make it a box office success.

@TatooineSons Snoke, black storm trooper, the rise of the first order under the new republic, Rey’s origin, Maz’s acquisition of Anakin/Luke’s lightsaber, etc. were one big mystery box the Rian Johnson took a 💩 on called The Last Jedi.

Between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi... We spent two years theorizing about Snoke. (Remember, "Your Snoke Theory Sucks"?) His origins. His power. His plans. But... The story was never about Snoke. And... Killing him mid-sentence, with the Skywalker legacy lightsaber, only to reveal that Kylo Ren was always the real villain? That's not a plot hole. That's the plot.

You don't need to retcon anything. Just start 10k years after Return of the Jedi with a blank slate. No Skywalkers, no Darth Bane, no force ghost cameos, no fucking Darth Maul in a hover wheelchair... Just The Force, spaceships, religions, factions, heroes, villains, and of course, laz0r swords All this legacy bullshit is tying Star Wars down. Fuck IP, man. Nobody knew who Obi-Wan, Darth Vader or the Skywalkers were before the first movie. Nobody knew who Revan was. All the great characters went through hero's journey / fallen hero / redemption myth arcs and that's what made them great and popular. You can't make Ahsoka happen. It's not gonna happen. You throw out all this bullshit and start from zero again.

One of The Return of the King’s best scenes began in the most incredible way. Philippa Boyens heard Billy Boyd sing karaoke during filming and realised Pippin’s voice could be used for something special. So when Denethor asked Pippin for a song, she gave Billy Tolkien’s words and asked him to find the melody himself. Boyd imagined it as something Pippin might have grown up hearing in the Shire: not grand, not heroic, just old, sad and familiar. That became The Edge of Night. That’s why the scene works so well. While Denethor eats and Faramir rides toward death, Pippin sings this small, innocent hobbit song. It feels like the Shire briefly entering the darkest corner of Gondor.

I’ll never forget how everyone lost their minds when Kylo killed Snoke and he and Rey fought together. Also watching the Haldo Maneuver for the first time that sound when it was dead silent omg the chills. TLJ is by far one of the best Star Wars movies ever and eventually I believe it will get the respect and recognition it deserves. It’s just a shame they treated Rian so poorly. He’s really the sweetest man.

@markboyle005886 funny, to me his story felt like the most believable transition from the OT given the time jump, & was actually what made me enjoy the movie the most because it felt like the natural response to someone watching the way he was trained completely fail when he tried to replicate it
