Reaching net zero is actually not just a net zero cost, it’s actually much cheaper than not reaching net zero plus vital benefits including better health from reduced pollution and less impact from climate change and more lse.ac.uk/granthaminstit…

The US is lifting sanctions against Belarusian banks and potassium, according to US Special Envoy John Cole. This is outrageous! Trump rewards aggressors, mass murderers, and dictators while blackmailing and insulting the victim, Ukraine. According to Cole, the restrictions against the Belarusian Ministry of Finance, the Belarus Development Bank, and Belinvestbank will be lifted. Furthermore, the Belarusian Potash Company and Belaruskali, the main producers of potash fertilizers, will be removed from the US sanctions list. The US Special Envoy stated that the lifting of the restrictions would be swift and noted that he had discussed this matter with officials from the Ministry of Finance before his visit to Minsk.

Reform UK's James Orr says the NHS will be free at the point of use What he doesn't tell you is that Nigel Farage has advocated for an insurance based NHS That means, as the UK taxpayer will pay more for the same services, even if the NHS is 'free at the point of use' When Fiona Bruce asks him to explain this, he waffles Exposed and humiliated on #BBCQT

@eric_hawkins9 @JMPSimor Immigration soared AFTER Brexit, not while we were in the EU. Farm workers came, worked well, went home. After Brexit farmers couldn’t get the staff any more. Government panicked and tried offering special visas on mean terms. Epic failure.

@DreamerBFC @Samson1176 @GarryOw11803872 @ret_ward Renewables employ more already though. And when prices rise above the strike price agreed, the excess goes to the government. Because electricity is tied to gas prices the government rakes it in from renewables when gas goes sky high like now.

This is wrong. There is a European international market on which gas from around the world is sold to the U.K. and other countries. North Sea gas is sold at this market price, not at a discount to British consumers.
John Redwood@johnredwood

There is no world price of gas. US home produced gas is so much cheaper than our imported LNG. To save our factories we need to press on with more UK piped gas where supply will be cheaper and more reliable than LNG imports.

End fossil fuel subsidies? There’s no industry more heavily subsidized than renewables. Taxpayer-funded “green” spending has run into the hundreds of billions of pounds in the UK alone, while the net economic contribution of the North Sea is measured in the trillions. This isn’t an argument for fossil fuels—it’s a statement of reality. Renewable growth and electrification will continue apace, but so will total energy demand. Like it or not, fossil fuels will remain indispensable for the foreseeable future.

@SkaraBraeRanch @ClaireCoutinho I challenge you to list all UK fossil fuel subsidies, direct and indirect alongside renewable subsidies. We built the grid for fossil fuel as an investment (subsidy). We need to invest in much more renewable energy to reduce costs and restore control.

@SkaraBraeRanch @ClaireCoutinho Aviation fuel in the UK pays no duty or VAT. When Ukraine was invaded we subsidised massively. We spent more in a short period propping up fossil that we’ve spent total kick starting renewables, unless you count the massive nuclear subsidy.

In Canterbury I’ve announced an expansion of antibiotics and vaccinations to help contain the outbreak of Meningitis B. Anyone who attended Club Chemistry from 5th March is eligible and those who’ve previously had the antibiotics can get the vaccine.

This sounds persuasive until you look at how the system actually works. 1) More North Sea gas won’t lower bills UK gas is sold at global prices. It doesn’t matter where it’s produced. That’s why bills surged in 2021–23 while we were still producing gas. Oxford analysis is clear: ➡️ more drilling does not reduce UK prices ⸻ 2) “It goes into our pipes” is not how markets work The UK is fully connected to international gas markets. Gas flows to the highest bidder. There is no “cheap UK-only gas”. ⸻ 3) Jackdaw doesn’t change the outcome Even if it starts this year: • It’s a tiny share of total demand • It does not move global prices So it doesn’t shield households from shocks like this. ⸻ 4) More gas increases exposure, not security If prices are set globally, producing more doesn’t protect you ➡️ it keeps you tied to volatility Real security comes from needing less gas ⸻ 5) Electricity is expensive, but not for the reason claimed It’s expensive because: • gas sets the price most of the time • electricity is overburdened with levies compared to gas The fix is to reduce gas price setting, not burn more gas ⸻ 6) Renewables reduce gas dependence Spain proves it: • gas sets price ~15% of the time • vs ~90% in more gas-exposed systems More clean power = less exposure to fossil shocks ⸻ 7) Heat pumps and EVs are the real resilience strategy • Heat pumps cut gas demand ~40% • EVs cut oil demand • both shift energy to domestic electricity That reduces total fossil fuel demand across the system ⸻ 8) Carbon tax claim is a distraction The main driver of high energy costs has been global gas prices not UK carbon pricing ⸻ 9) North Sea jobs and revenue are a separate issue You can support workers and manage transition without claiming it lowers bills or improves price stability ⸻ 10) Nuclear has a role, but doesn’t solve this problem It’s slow and expensive to build It doesn’t address near-term gas exposure ⸻ Bottom line More North Sea gas: ➡️ doesn’t lower prices ➡️ doesn’t arrive fast enough ➡️ keeps us exposed to global shocks Clean power + electrification: ➡️ reduce gas demand ➡️ stabilise prices ➡️ improve energy security theconversation.com/would-more-nor…
