Pre-1959 Cuba was among Latin America's richer nations. Castro's regime turned it into the Western Hemisphere's first Communist state via total nationalization (including American assets), central planning, and elimination of private incentives, destroying agriculture, industry, and growth. Result: chronic poverty, dependency on an annual Soviet 4-8 billion subsidies, then repeated collapses.
Millions emigrated (roughly 10–20% of population fled over decades).
Human cost: thousands executed, tens of thousands of political prisoners tortured/imprisoned, pervasive surveillance state crushing all dissent, no free elections or speech for 67 years. Literacy/health programs touted by regime came with Orwellian control and eroded in crises; real legacy is one of fear, exodus, and economic ruin under a one-party dictatorship that still prioritizes power over people.
Cuba remains a failed Communist outpost in 2026; impoverished, repressive, and in acute crisis. This is who these western activists support and while they say it’s for the people, the people remain in hunger and darkness while they party and lodge like the regime and do their bidding for them, hanging any and all issue on US policy.
