If only there was a website with all the info parents need to find child care in New York City, including a map with every licensed provider in each neighborhood…
Oh wait! Now there is: nyc.gov/childcare

@basketballbrian @slibnik You ever find out what this was? We saw this too in phx, was wild

@otis_reid @kylascan I would assume density. If you use a mobile crane you may need to shut down a street for access, which can be costly with the municipality. Site layout and material delivery logistics are also factors. Safety is important too, to not swing over sidewalks, etc

Obviously a lot going on here but Australia appears to have 2x as many tower cranes active as the 14 biggest cities in North America

Otis Reid@otis_reid
Something I’d love to read more about is regulations on crane usage. I have a perception (surprisingly hard to check) that the US greatly underindexes on crane usage (eg reports of thousands of cranes active in Spain pre GFC) and city variation in crane usage also real

@otis_reid @kylascan Tower cranes are only for skyscrapers - they have a small radius but can reach as high as you build it. Mobile cranes can traverse the site across large areas and can mob/demob easier. Google TSMC AZ pics, $170B in total work and entirely mobile cranes.

@JimiPee @kylascan Can you say more? Why wouldn’t they use tower cranes instead of crawlers? This article argues that crawlers are inferior but they are basically a regulatory workaround (at least in NYC) city-journal.org/article/decons…
