Major Breaking News ‼️ South Sudan Orders Closure of Egyptian Military Base Following President’s Visit to Ethiopia‼️ In a significant diplomatic shift, South Sudan has ordered the closure of an Egyptian military base in the Jute region of Upper Nile state, effectively ending Cairo’s military footprint near the Ethiopian border. This decision comes shortly after South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s official visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he held bilateral talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed focused on strengthening ties, regional security, and cooperation. The move signals a potential realignment in Juba’s foreign policy priorities and has raised questions about its implications for longstanding relations with Egypt. The base’s location in a strategically sensitive area close to the Ethiopia-South Sudan border had granted Egypt a foothold amid broader regional tensions, particularly those linked to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and competition for influence across the Horn of Africa. By terminating all forms of Egyptian military presence, South Sudan appears to be prioritizing closer coordination with Ethiopia while navigating complex Nile Basin dynamics and border security concerns. Neither Cairo nor Juba has issued detailed official statements on the exact reasons or timeline for the closure, but the development is viewed as a notable change in East Africa’s military landscape. This unexpected development could reshape regional security alliances and prompt intensified diplomatic maneuvering among Nile riparian states. Observers suggest it may reflect emerging understandings between Juba and Addis Ababa, possibly aimed at de-escalating external influences near shared borders and focusing instead on bilateral economic and peacebuilding initiatives. The closure might also alleviate Ethiopian concerns about potential encirclement or proxy activities, while testing the resilience of Egypt-South Sudan ties forged in previous years. Furthermore, the timing underscores the fluid nature of Horn of Africa geopolitics, where water resources, border stability, and great-power interests frequently intersect. As political and diplomatic circles monitor the fallout, there are expectations of renewed engagements to manage any strains in bilateral relations or ripple effects on issues like refugee flows, cross-border trade, and counter-insurgency efforts. The episode highlights South Sudan’s growing agency in balancing external partnerships to safeguard its sovereignty and development goals in a volatile region.

Ethiopia Targets Historic $10 Billion Export Milestone Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced Saturday that Ethiopia is on track to generate $10 billion in export revenue this fiscal year, a first in the country’s history. Speaking at the opening of the 4th ‘Made in Ethiopia’ Expo, Abiy said the projected figure marks a “dramatic increase” from just three years ago, when annual exports had not exceeded $3 billion. What’s driving the surge: Industrial growth: Manufacturing growth has climbed from 4.7% to 10.7% this year. Import substitution: Ethiopia has produced $14.5 billion worth of import-substitute goods over the past four years and plans to double that figure. Reopened factories: 993 previously closed industries have resumed operations, boosting jobs and trade. New investment: 3,680 new investors have entered the manufacturing sector since the national industrial drive began. More exports mean more foreign currency, easing debt pressure and strengthening Ethiopia’s trade position. Abiy warned that without expanding domestic production, the country risks “mounting debt burdens that could affect future generations”. He urged manufacturers to embrace “economic patriotism,” reject contraband and corruption, and look beyond the local market: “The time of producing only for the domestic market is over,” Abiy said, calling on firms to expand across Africa. 47b5 Ethiopia’s economic strategy has shifted toward boosting exports while cutting import dependence. The jump from $3 billion to $10 billion would reshape how the country negotiates trade, attracts investment, and positions itself in continental supply chains. With coffee and gold exports already surging and a recent $13 billion investment haul at Addis Ababa’s investment conference, the $10 billion target signals Ethiopia’s bid to become a regional manufacturing and export hub.

🇪🇹|| Claude AI officially enters Ethiopia As of yesterday, May 1, 2026, Anthropic has officially expanded access to Claude AI in Ethiopia. This marks a significant milestone in our digital journey, placing advanced generative AI tools directly into the hands of local developers, students, and businesses. For those of us in the blockchain and tech space, this isn't just another chatbot; it’s a high-level coding and data analysis partner that understands complex reasoning better than almost any other platform. The arrival of Claude alongside global giants like Google and OpenAI is a massive win for our startup ecosystem. Local builders can now use these tools to prototype dApps faster, audit smart contracts with higher precision, and automate customer service in local languages. As we move toward the Digital Ethiopia 2030 goals, having official access to these global "brains" means we are no longer just consumers of technology, but active competitors in the global AI race. While the tech is exciting, the real challenge now shifts from access to application. With the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute (EAII) pushing for homegrown innovation, tools like Claude will act as a force multiplier for our youth. Whether you are a student working on a research paper or a dev building the next big fintech solution in Addis, the barrier to entry has never been lower. The future is here let’s use it to build something uniquely Ethiopian. #ClaudeAI #EthiopiaTech #DigitalEthiopia2030 #AI #AddisAbaba #Innovation #StartupEthiopia

This morning, I visited the Gobeze Solar Cell manufacturing plant located in the Huajian Special Economic Zone in Addis Ababa. The factory was established based on an agreement signed during the 2025 Invest in Ethiopia Forum, with an initial phase investment of 100 million dollars. With effective support and close follow-up, the “Gobeze Solar Cell” manufacturing plant became operational in just six months. It is equipped with modern machinery and technology. The factory has also created job opportunities for many citizens. In its first phase, the factory has an annual production capacity of 2 gigawatts, contributing additional capacity toward realizing Ethiopia’s national vision of fully meeting its energy demand through renewable sources. In addition, we also visited a shoe manufacturing factory and a substation located within the industrial park.

Once a neglected and hazardous area, the Arada district has been reimagined into a magnificent urban sanctuary. For us, Ethiopia is not merely a dream to be envisioned, it is a reality to be built. We are building a nation that is healthy, resilient, and full of promise for future generations that is also a leader in Africa and a formidable competitor on the global stage. Each day, we continue to turn this promise into reality.

Today we officially launched the Ethio-Djibouti Bulk Cargo Container (BCC) — a game-changing solution to tackle shipping liner container shortages for bulk cargo exports and imports. This marks another major milestone in the Ethio-Djibouti cargo container shipment journey, especially during these challenging times of fuel shortages and price surges. A huge thank you to the Ethiopian and Djibouti customs authorities for making this happen in such a timely manner. At EDR , we keep trade moving. 🇪🇹🤝🇩🇯
