My heart laments at what she has become. I dare not ponder long, in fear of the meaning thereof, yet I find it impossible to discard the thought - it burrows continuously - perhaps this was she all along? Were my musings of a maiden fair, queenly and radiant during my youth merely imaginings? Tales told of fantasies, yet hereto she stands adorned with a countenance as frozen as that of Edith. She dishonors herself! Laying down with any who would be a suitor and willing to provide her with silver, her preferred amongst the treasures; for 40 pieces she absconds care for her young. For that weight she remembers not her husband, who'd been reared since a prince to be a crown for her. He was to be an illumination unto her, a tower above others for all the world to see. She dishonoring their marriage, each day from the rising of the sun til the setting down of the same, trampling his life beneath her feet. She cares not for tomorrow for her it is of no consequence. I pray for her that she may come into herself once again remembering her father's place where she'd been reared. That she might repent and return to him that he may adorn her once again with the ring of his house and restore her to her rightful place.

🔸 Sunday of the Blind Man 👀 🔸 Today, the sixth Sunday of Holy Pascha, we commemorate the miracle of Christ healing the blind man as recorded in the Gospel of John (9:1–41). As the Savior disputed with the Pharisees in the Temple during the Feast of Tabernacles, He said to them, “Before Abraham was, I AM.” For confessing His divinity in this way - since “I AM” is the name that God used to identify Himself to Moses in the Burning Bush - the Jews picked up stones to throw at Him, and He fled from the Temple. While passing by, He found a man who had been blind since birth. The disciples asked Christ if it was the blind man or his parents who had sinned for him to receive this condition - for it was common belief that physical afflictions were a divine punishment for the sins of a person (or their parents). Christ answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God might be revealed in him.” He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. He then sent him to wash in the pool of Siloam. By sending the blind man to the pool, Christ tests his faith and requests his free and voluntary participation in the miracle. The blind man obeyed, and after washing in the pool, he was able to see. Just as the Lord created man in Genesis from the dust of the ground, Christ fashioned eyes for the blind man from the clay of the earth. This was the greatest miracle that Christ had yet worked, as this divine act of creation demonstrated that Christ Himself is the Creator. After Christ had left, the Pharisees questioned the man who was blind, suspecting that he was pretending to see. But even when they recognised this miracle to be true, they shut the eyes of their souls. When the man told them that the One who made him see was truly a Man of God, they excommunicated him from the synagogue. Christ later found the formerly blind man and said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?” The man answered, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” When Christ responded, “It is He who is talking with you,” the formerly blind man confessed, “Lord, I believe!” And he worshipped Him.

Father Ephrem's three euros. Father Ephrem was a monk who had no one in the world. His cell was carved in a rock near Karulia. Fans who visited him often tried to leave him money by seeing the holes in his shoes. Old man, take this money for your needs, they told him. He was only accepting three euros. Not a penny more. If someone insisted on giving him twenty euros, Father Ephrem begged him to go to Carea, spoil them and return only three. A young monk from a neighboring cell, named Pavel one day asked him with questions: Old man, why are you bothering with this change? Three euros are not enough for anything! Why not save something extra for necessity? Father Ephrem invited him to sit on the stone overlooking the endless blue sea. Listen, my child, the Old Man began. My wallet is like a scale. When there are three euros inside, everything in it is perfectly balanced between earth and sky. The First Euro: This is "Thank you" for yesterday. Reminds me I survived another day and didn't miss anything. The Second Euro: This is the "Benefit" for today. If I am very hungry, I will buy a walnut for one euro. When I'm thirsty, the water is free from the spring. Third Euro: This is a "reserve" for the foreigner. If anyone comes in hungrier than me, I must have something to give them. What about tomorrow, old man?Asked Paul. Tomorrow my child is expensive, and I am poor. When I put four euros in my wallet, I will start thinking about tomorrow. And once you start thinking about tomorrow, you lose today's peace. The three euros are my guarantee that God will take care of me without me needing anything else. Shortly afterwards, Father Ephrem fell ill. When the other monks went to help him, they found his wallet on the table. There were, as always, three euros inside. There was a note next to it. One euro for the father who'll make my opello, one euro for the one who'll dig my tomb, and one euro for coffee to the first pilgrim who'll come after I'm gone. I'm leaving rich because I don't owe anyone alarm. Father Pavel kept this wallet as a cherished memento. Not because of the value of money, but to remember that true happiness is not to have full storage rooms, but a light wallet that takes you to paradise.

"The Christian has no reason to have in his heart any ill-feeling whatever against anyone, such ill-feeling, like every other evil, is the work of the Devil; the Christian must only have love in his heart; & as love cannot think of evil, he cannot have any ill-feeling against others." - St John of Kronstadt

There is a lamp on Mount Athos that swings by itself before wars and disasters. The scariest part, say the monks, is that it has never been wrong. This lamp hangs in front of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God—the Gatekeeper, the main shrine of Athos. As the story goes, a warrior once struck this icon with a spear, and blood flowed from the wound on the face of the Virgin. The trace of that blow is still visible. To save the icon, a pious widow dropped it into the sea, and it went away on the waves on its own. Later, the monks of Athos saw a pillar of fire in the sea. The Iveron icon had sailed to them. The holy elder Gabriel went to her on the water, took her in his hands, and the icon was placed in the temple. But in the morning, she was found over the monastery gates. This repeated three times. Then, words were heard: "Do not take care of Me—I will take care of you." That is why she is the Gatekeeper. A silver lamp hangs in front of this icon. It is plain-looking, but during the service, and sometimes on ordinary days, it begins to swing by itself—without wind, without contact. For the monks, it is a sign. The Mother of God is warning of impending affliction. As soon as the lamp begins to swing, the news goes out all over the Holy Mount. Monks gather in the temples, strengthen their fasting, and pray fervently. Because as long as there is prayer, trouble can still be averted. Before wars and disasters, the lamp has swung more than once. And the monks have said: "The lamp has spoken." But it is not meant to scare; it is to warn people to wake up, repent, and remember God. While the lamp is swinging/burning, there is still time. But the question is no longer just about the lamp. The question is with us. Do we even hear God's warnings? Or do we wake up only when it's too late? ~Roman Golovanov
