Rev. Edward Nalwamba — who came to the U.S. from Uganda 24 years ago and overstayed his visa — has been in immigration detention since last fall. Now, the 78-year-old has lost 35 pounds and is so weak that he cannot walk unassisted. wapo.st/4f6u61H

Kampala ‘uptown’ restaurant owners, it’s bad customer ‘care’ to have on your menu dishes you perpetually don’t prepare. A menu is a living document—editable!

It is most times laughable finding a typical Ugandan flexing existential questions like the meaning of life, whether God is real, etc; when most people are literally struggling to just exist. Uganda is a densely churched society where Christian language for instance is everywhere and the big questions are often treated as already answered, sometimes genuinely, often only nominally.

Princeton researchers have cleared a major hurdle toward the advent of practical quantum computing by developing a new kind of superconducting qubit that improves quantum coherence time by 15 times that of industry standards. The new qubit design is similar to those already used by leading companies like Google and IBM, and could easily be slotted into existing processors, according to the researchers. Hindsight makes history linear, easy and moral; context, on the other hand, gives history its power and purpose. To understand why a specific decision, in history, was taken, you have to labour to recreate the context and facts that surround it that led to the decision

It’s accurate, Brian. You only emphasized the need to limit blue light especially at night, and inversely letting in sunlight first thing in the morning. We’d appreciate in-depth posts on foods to eat for better eye health; how to restore a weakening lens if you’re struggling to read from a distance, etc

The @KarisMedical Naalya clinic will be fully dependent on solar energy. If you have a “serious” business that pays over 2 million shillings a month to umeme, speak to my partner @jtatuhaire. We can save your business money. A lot of money. @HiingaInc

A full-scale shift toward healthier diets, combined with improved farm productivity and a halving of food waste, could reduce global agricultural land use roughly 6% by 2050 – an area the size of India – and lead to a 42% decline ($630 billion) in global livestock production value, according to a sweeping new analysis published in the May edition of Nature. That reversal would be historically unprecedented, marking one of the first sustained contractions in farmland in modern history. The reason is straightforward but profound: a world that eats differently, farms differently. “This work underlines that the scale of this change is huge and the policy ambition has to be commensurate with the challenge,” said Matthew Gibson, former postdoctoral associate in the Food Systems and Global Change research group in the @CornellCALS Ashley School of Global Development and the Environment. “We have to think about a coordinated push involving governments, industry, and consumers alike.” More: news.cornell.edu/stories/2026/0….

The most confusing academic job title in the US is Assistant Professor (especially if you need to translate it). Some people assume it means “assistant to a professor” - someone who helps a professor. An Assistant Professor is an independent professor. They run their own lab, supervise their own PhD students, secure their own research grants, and teach their own courses. They are not assisting anyone. It’s simply the historical name for the first professorial rank in the U.S. academic system.
