The Minister Lena Diab who announced it states — “This will help defend our sovereignty and keep Canadians safe." It’s about to get a lot easier to use the Canadian military against Canadian citizens, when the soldiers aren't even Canadian. This is a threat to the National Security of the United States. Every fucking day … OK, this one fucked up even for the Mounties. In May 2023, RCMP officers responded to a wellness check at the Chilliwack, B.C., home of Daniel Hackl, who was experiencing a mental health crisis and was believed to be armed. During a prolonged standoff, Hackl fired at Emergency Response Team officers, with one bullet narrowly missing an officer and another striking a ballistic shield. After negotiations and other de-escalation efforts failed, officers approved a plan to deploy smoke grenades that intentionally ignited the house in an effort to force Hackl out and end the confrontation. As the house burned, Hackl emerged wearing only body armour and surrendered. Court documents later revealed the fire had been intentionally started by police, prompting debate over the legality, proportionality, and precedent of using fire as a tactical policing tool. The idea that police can intentionally set a person’s home on fire to end a standoff should alarm every single Canadian. Fire is unpredictable. It can spread uncontrollably in seconds. It doesn’t care about property lines, neighbours, or first responders. If this becomes an acceptable tactic, where does it stop? Police must have the tools to deal with armed threat, but those powers must be necessary, proportionate, and accountable. Intentionally burning down a home in a residential neighbourhood sets a dangerous precedent. In fact it’s more than a little fucked up. If this was justified, prove it. Release the policies, the risk assessments, and the decision-making process. Extraordinary powers demand extraordinary transparency.

As someone who speaks French and supports the broad goal of official bilingualism, I think this kind of regulatory over reach is hugely counter productive. It’s an effort to impose a false reality on the private sector in communities with small (in some cases tiny) francophone populations. This sort of thing undermines public support for bilingualism in general. It’s costly, pointless, and will create unintended consequences. It imposes huge new costs on the private sector when our economy is struggling, and we should be focussing on a prosperity / productivity agenda. When banks can’t find enough francophone staff in a place like Yarmouth, don’t be surprised if they close rather than pay massive fines to service a small community. Trucking firms in Edmonton have a hard enough time finding English speaking drivers / staff. How are they supposed to hire French workers in a city where 1% of the population are francophones, all to provide french service where there is no demand? The fines these and other businesses will be forced to pay will just increase prices and be passed onto consumers, when the government says it’s focussed on reducing the cost of living. It’s stupid policies like this that make many Canadians feel like Ottawa is out of touch with reality.
